Early Identification of Females with Autism: Comprehensive Evaluation

  • Chapter
  • First Online:
Assessment of Autism in Females and Nuanced Presentations

Abstract

The purpose of this work is to accomplish earlier identification of females and those with more nuanced autistic traits. This chapter lays the groundwork for early identification with comprehensive evaluation for young children, with more details in subsequent chapters for school-age children, adolescents, and adults. Barriers to identification, performance of screeners and measures in female children, first-person accounts, and a discussion of comprehensive evaluations are included. Implementation information (e.g., screeners and measures) are given as a guide to building a comprehensive evaluation battery for the assessment of females and other nuanced cases. Finally, directions for support needs are included.
