Abstract
Interpersonal aggression can be divided into two subtypes: reactive and proactive aggressions. Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) of interpersonal aggression is well studied for reactive aggression because representative behavioral tasks for reactive aggression are already established and can be conducted in an MRI scanner. By contrast, behavioral tasks for proactive aggression have not been established yet. In the first half of this chapter, MRI studies of reactive aggression are reviewed. Next, the second half of the chapter introduces an integrated study of resting-state fMRI and a recently proposed behavioral task (so called catch-ball task) designed to investigate proactive aggression. Resting-state fMRI can reveal individual differences in brain functional connectivity and can be measured without imposing a behavioral task in MRI scanner. This integrated approach allows us to identify functional connectivity which characterizes a specific behavioral pattern in the catch-ball task without sacrificing the task reality. This chapter concludes with several future directions in research on proactive aggression.
