Abstract
Anxiety disorders are highly prevalent in school-aged children and adolescents, affecting youth worldwide. Social anxiety, separation anxiety, and generalized anxiety are among the most common anxiety disorders experienced by children and adolescents. Specific phobias, including test anxiety, and school refusal related to anxiety are also common. Anxiety disorders can lead to impairment in many facets of youth’s lives including in school and academic functioning. In this chapter, we will present prevalence rates and comorbidities, diagnostic considerations, and illustrative examples of these disorders in school-aged children and adolescents. Cultural consideration in prevalence, diagnosis, and presentation of anxiety disorders will also be discussed.
