About this book


​Globalization in the 21st century has contributed towards tremendous changes in world society. Countries across the world are facing issues such as poverty, climate change, population ageing, issues related to immigration, migration, COVID-19 and intergenerational historic trauma, mental illness and rising income inequality. In addition, the established world order and global dominance of the Western-centric development agenda and modernity and the unequal distribution of world’s resources have created tremendous problems for many people living in global as well as local communities, both in developed and developing countries. 

This major reference work handbook discusses global social problems across social, political, economic and geographical boundaries. By bringing together contributions that approach social problems at different levels of society (local, regional, national, transnational, or at the macro, meso and micro levels), it considers them as globally interconnected and mediated by new geopolitical and market logics. 

This volume showcases new approaches to social problems, it is multidisciplinary in its approach and thematically organised.

About the editors



Rajendra Baikady is a Social Work educator and researcher. He is the winner of Golda Meir Post-Doctoral Fellowship at Hebrew University of Jerusalem, Israel (2019-2020) and Confucius Studies Understanding China Fellowship (Post-Doctoral Research) at Shandong University Peoples Republic of China (2018-2019). 

Sajid S.M is Professor and former  Pro-Vice Chancellor,  Department of Social Work, Jamia Milia Islamia New, Delhi India

Jaroslaw Przeperski  is Director Centre for Family Research and adjunct professor in the Social Work Department,  Nicolaus Copernicus University in Torun Poland. He is also an expert on family matters in the Polish Ministry of Justice and the Ministry of Family, Labour and Social Policy. 

Varoshini Nadesan is resident: Association of South African Social Work Education Institutions and a lecturerat the Department of Social Work in the Faculty of Humanities at the University of Johannesburg (UJ), South Africa. 

M. Rezaul Islam is Professor in Social Work, Institute of Social Welfare and Research, University of Dhaka, Bangladesh and Academic Adviser at the Department of Social Administration & Justice, University of Malaya, Malaysia

Gao Jianguo is a Professor and former Head in the Department of Social Work, School of Philosophy and Social Development, Shandong University, Peoples Republic of China.
