A scalable approach towards decentralized electronic toll collection system using Solana and RFID

Abstract

At present, nearly all highways have toll plazas that are operated manually. The operators have to manually permit the vehicles to pass. Even the current automatic toll collection systems are not as efficient, reliable, or secure, and they are at risk of a single point of failure due to their centralized nature. The unreliability and lack of security of the existing system make it vulnerable to attacks, data manipulation, privacy issues, compatibility issues, etc. Apart from these, there are other general issues, like excessively long traffic times, increased commute times, pollution, etc. With the help of blockchain and RFID technology, the issues and inefficiencies of established toll tax collection systems can be easily tackled. This research work proposes a scalable blockchain-based toll tax collection framework (SB-TCS), implemented through the integration of blockchain and RFID into the currently deployed Automatic toll collection systems (ATCS), thus saving time, reducing overall running costs, and strengthening the security and privacy of the system. The main contributions of the SB-TCS system compared to the previously presented decentralized Electronic Toll Collection Systems (ETCs) are scalability, less energy consumption, and reduced traffic times at the toll booth.
