Handbook of Clinical Child Psychology

Abstract

The following chapter provides an overview of the common forms (i.e., physical, relational, and cyber) and functions (i.e., proactive and reactive) of aggression. Descriptions of these aggression subtypes are provided, including rates and developmental trends, etiological factors, and adjustment outcomes. Theoretical and conceptual models are outlined to explain the developmental pathways of the forms and functions of aggression, methods used to assess the various subtypes are reviewed, and implications for prevention and intervention strategies are discussed. The chapter concludes by identifying future directions for better understanding these forms and functions of aggression.
