LPTM Connecting Communities Across the Globe

Our summer program, LPTM Connecting Communities Across the Globe, engages boys and young men ages 3-14 daily from June to August. The program focuses on the cultural study of a new foreign country each summer, Connecting Communities incorporates three core strategies: one academic/education based, which includes in-depth math, literacy, and individual tutoring designed to prevent summer learning loss; the second focused on promoting creative self-expression; the third focused on discovering ‘what is community’ by exploring similarities and differences between other communities and the communities of our youth. Students are assessed at the beginning of the program to see where they need the most support. The art/creative expression offers students the opportunity to express themselves and learn to collaborate through the arts.

Apprentices learn about themselves through the context of the greater world. Each group learns about this foreign country as well as how it compares to their community in Washington, DC. Through guest speakers, field trips, and cultural enrichment activities, Apprentices learn about themselves in the context of more than their local neighborhoods, fostering their growth into global citizens. Countries & communities featured in past years include the Philippines, Brazil, South Africa, Ireland, China, Mexico, and various tribes and nations of Indigenous Americans.

Connecting Communities Across the Globe reminds our apprentices that they are global citizens, empowering our boys to see themselves in a brighter light and fostering their creative, academic, social-emotional, physical and citizenship development.

Connecting Communities Across the Globe reminds our youth that they are global citizens, freeing our boys to see themselves in a brighter light. We reflect on our own community, what community means to us, and what community looks like throughout the world.

Each summer, we take advantage of the unique international opportunities offered in Washington DC. Through guest speakers, field trips, and cultural enrichment events and activities. Each summer ends with a culminating final presentation, where Apprentices perform and present about multiple communities as expressed through culture, languages, art, dress, sports, food, families, schools, and key events impacting their people.

Creating Art… Changing Lives.

With love, security, and expression, each of us can become a masterpiece.
