Foundational Trainings

The Center's Foundational Trainings are designed to help participants develop a basic understanding of LGBTQ+ concepts.

9
1 hour  | In-person (UP TO 20 INDIVIDUALS) & virtual (UP TO 50 INDIVIDUALS)

lgbtq 101 for allies

Our most popular training, this one-hour session introduces several key topics related to LGBT inclusion, including common terminology, intersectionality, gender, and how to use inclusive gender pronouns. Participants will also learn about supporting LGBTQ folks through allyship. Allyship is part of the anti oppression conversation, which puts into use social justice theories and ideals. There may be an option for someone from the Speakers’ Bureau to deliver the training at lower cost.

LGBTQ 101 FOR ALLIES
THE WORKSHOP

Covering the same basics from LGBTQ 101, this training is more interactive, allowing participants to reflect on their own biases and practice allyship through a series of scenarios. Due to the longer timeframe and interactive format, this training requires a bigger commitment from the participants but does not assume prior training.

11
1 hour | in-person (20) & virtual (50)

trans 101

Sexual orientation and gender identity are unique and separate concepts. The Trans 101 lesson is designed to increase fluency around gender and  teach awareness about the discrimination transgender, non-binary, and gender expansive individuals face. The training discusses gender formation, transitioning, and the barriers to it.

13
.5 hour  | IN-PERSON (20) & VIRTUAL (50)

GENDER PRONOUNS 101

Learning about inclusive gender pronouns can be challenging for many participants who are working toward being active allies. Our Gender Pronouns 101 Training is designed to teach participants about the different types of pronouns, provide suggestions for how to include the use of them, as well as opportunities to practice using them.

SPECIALIZED TRAININGS

The Center's Specialized Trainings are designed to help participants expand upon their foundational knowledge by applying the learning concepts to specialized settings.

14
2 HOURS  | In-PERSON (20) & VIRTUAL (50)

LGBTQ INCLUSIVITY FOR
MEDICAL PROVIDERS

LGBTQ+ people face unique stressors that can contribute to poor health outcomes. Additionally, experiences of discrimination discourage many from seeking care, which can increase adverse health outcomes. Few providers have formal training in addressing the specialized needs of this vulnerable population, and we’re trying to change that. Professionals trained in LGBTQ sensitivity see improved patient outcomes and satisfaction. This training discusses what it means to transition between genders, LGBTQ health disparities, and strategies for how to be an ally in a medical setting.

15
2 HOURS | IN-PERSON (20) & VIRTUAL (50)

LGBTQ INCLUSIVITY FOR EDUCATIORS

The LGBTQ Inclusivity for Educators Training prepares educators to address the needs of LGBTQ+ scholars and colleagues in school settings and helps educators to consider how to create more supportive spaces for LGBTQ+ individuals. This lesson delves into the experiences of LGBTQ+ youth and the current challenges for educators. The lesson also explores different social justice models that can be applied in a school setting (trauma-informed practice, restorative justice, strengths-based vs. deficit-based perspectives, and the co conspirator model). Last, this training will allow educators to explore ways in which they can actively be allies specific to the school setting.

GEAR SHIFT

Modeled off the SafeZone Curriculum, this training is an interactive workshop intended to build empathy and develop allyship skills. Participants reflect on their own background with LGBTQ topics, learn terms related to sexuality and gender identity, reflect on privilege, discuss allyship, and practice strategies for responding to anti-LGBTQ microaggressions.

COMMUNITY TRAININGS

The Center's Community Trainings are designed to provide more financially accessible training offerings to organizations.

SPEAKERS BUREAU

The Speaker’s Bureau is a team of diverse LGBTQ+ individuals who can speak about the LGBT Community Center, serve on panels, and potentially provide the following presentations: LGBTQ 101 for Allies, Trans 101, and Gender Pronouns 101. Since the Speakers’ Bureau are not professional trainers or full-time employees, their presentations are more casual and more affordable. Please keep in mind that any requests outside of this description are outside of the qualifications of the Speaker’s Bureau and will be considered as a regular or customized training provided by the Center’s Education Team. Additionally, these speakers do not typically have as much availability as the Education Team.
