  What a shitfest. I would probably have liked this film better if it had been about a cat. Or, hell, even about that goose that walks around on the farm at the beginning of this film. That was a great goose.

  For a film called 'War Horse', it takes a long time for the 'war'-element to enter, so for the first 50 minutes, it's mainly 'horse' - and I happened to skip the horse part in my coming of age. I once read that girls either go through a horse phase or a popstar phase to prepare themselves for the idea of a romantic partner, and from age 9 onwards, I was all about the popstars and actors, as documented…

  I am genuinely dumbfounded by the negativity War Horse (2011) receives. Overly sentimental, unrealistic, not brutal enough and too manipulative, all seem to be the favoured opinions. For what it’s worth I think the cinematography and production design is incredible and the screenplay very effective, focusing on a cyclical structure that delivers both emotion and bags of heart. The war scenes are really impressive and respectfully done considering the demographic the book was written for. John Williams score is beautiful and Steven Spielberg’s direction graceful. A wonderful experience that would not have had the same impact had the sentimentality been toned down and the violence turned up.

  Alright that's it, I'm starting to get really hacked off with these same boring and tired critiques of Spielberg. There's nothing more infuriating than seeing a bunch of lazy reviews bemoaning Spielberg for being "tOo SeNtiMenTal." Firstly, you're not original. It's Spielberg, one of the most compassionate and humanistic directors in Hollywood so of course his films are going to reflect that. Secondly, I don't see people complaining when other filmmakers get too nihilistic or end their movies on a downer. In fact it seems like people revere that more.

  I don't see what the issue is when a film is engaging in sentimentality? Maybe if more people were sentimental the world would be a better place to live rather…

  maybe i'm biased bc this was one of my favorites a little over a decade ago, and my sister and i always bonded over our love for this, but this is such a beautiful film. i hadn't even thought of it in years, but my sister brought it up about a week ago, so i decided to buy it and here i am rewatching it after so many years and i still think it's nearly perfect. the horse girl in me that i thought i had buried deep is suddenly coming out. and why am i just now realizing this was directed by steven spielberg?? it all makes sense now.

  and for the people on here who are complaining about the horse... it's literally called war horse. why watch it if you didn't want to see a damn horse?
