  There’s one scene where Bruce Willis and Sylvester Stallone are talking for about five minutes and Bruce tells Sylvester exactly what he needs from him and then Sylvester ends the conversation by saying “let’s talk” and I think that’s brilliant writing.

  Mickey Rourke had absolutely no business going so hard with that emotional monologue.

  Insane how much of this is underlit, cut to shit and digital looking. The only possible explanation is that somewhere between Rambo 4 (which is still one of the stickiest, most effectively sadistic films of his career) and this Stallone hit himself on the head very hard and forgot the basic building blocks of action directing. I do like briefly hanging out with my boys Dolph and Mickey though.

  Starring: The Bold, Bald, Gruff Action Man Jason Statham

  After hearing about it and seeing a few seconds of it a while back, I finally get around to see this action saga in which some of the greatest action heroes and villains of the 1980s square off against each other.

  And sure, I mean, the picture is not objectively good at all, and it's one of those movies where you can tell there's a lot of wasted potential; nevertheless, I also cannot say that I was not entertained. Stallone and Statham work well together; their partnership has the air of two action heroes, action stars from two generations, working together for the greater good. I also enjoy the insider references…

  An old school action extravaganza, one that entertains with its kickass ensemble and heavy nostalgic feel. The scene featuring Sylvester Stallone along with the cameos of Arnold Schwarzenegger n Bruce Willis gives an inexplicable excitement. The charm of its cast in Jason Stathom, Jet Li, Terry Crews, Dolph Lendgren, Randy Couture and Steve Austin carry enough awe factor and deliver the fun you look out for. While the action sequences are over the top n bombastic, they send you through a rush of adrenaline. Despite of the lack of story and uneven screenplay, it is still watchable for the explosive adventure.

  Times change. What was once regarded as the norm is now considered passe. Action stars of the 80s and 90s were struggling in the new century, being unable to bring something new and instead recycling the same old stuff over and over again. The face of the action genre has changed significantly. So at a time when the action genre was being diluted into other genres and was becoming synonymous with CGI effects, twenty-something leads or Liam Neeson, bringing all the action giants of former glory together in one movie sure was a great idea. Taking advantage of the current state of action movies and the nostalgia factor while promising old-school material with a hefty dose of testosterone, The Expendables…

  When I first read what Stallone was planning to do I was rather excited. It was such a cool concept to get together this cast and make a full on action film with them. The concept stands, some of the action works, but most of it is an unbelievable bore.

  The script is of the 'my two year old had this great idea' variety and the dialogue matches. It is a complete waste of time and of all the talent involved. There's no chemistry, the humour falls flat and the dialogue is just excruciatingly bad.

  The title is very apt though and almost feels like a meta criticism by its makers.

  It’s for people born in the 1960s, 1970s or maybe even in the 1980s, if not just skip.

  Jason Statham steals the show, by the way.
