Afternoon Program

Breakout Sessions By Track

1:30 p.m. – 3 p.m. PST

Monday, Wednesday, Thursday

In the afternoon, fellows choose between two practical tracks to develop skills in editing, digital production, design, and marketing.

Book Track

Book Track fellows will meet in workshops led by an independent publisher to learn about book production and distribution. Working in teams on an open-source book of their choice, fellows will learn how books are printed and converted into e-book format and distributed to libraries and bookstores. In special workshop sessions, they will hear from book sellers, designers, marketers, and production specialists.

Magazine Track

Fellows in the Magazine Track produce and publish an issue of PubLab, the official online journal of the LARB Publishing Workshop and a LARB Channel featuring writing by Publishing Workshop fellows and alumni.  Afternoon sessions led by LARB staff will offer training in skills such as organizing a masthead; assembling editorial and production calendars; the fundamentals of developmental editing, copy editing, fact checking, and proofreading; CMS and WordPress basics; art direction and image copyrights; and more.

PubLab

Publab, an official channel of the LA Review of Books, is the literary magazine published every year by fellows in the Magazine Track.  All fellows (Book and Magazine tracks) as well as alumni of the Publishing Workshop may submit original writing and art work for consideration.
