Facilities Security Officer

KRS 91.906 and KRS 16.040 requires that all persons commissioned as a Special Law Enforcement Officers shall be:

• A citizen of the United States
• Of good moral character and in good health.
• Not less than twenty-one (21) years of age.
• Possess a valid driver’s license against which no more than six (6) driver demerit points have been assessed. You must submit a copy of a valid driver’s license at the time of application.
• At the time of application, possess a minimum of a high school diploma or GED.
• Capable of meeting the requirements to receive a Special Law Enforcement Officer (SLEO) commission under KRS 61.900 – 61.930. KSP Facilities Security Officers must complete initial firearms training and maintain yearly firearms qualifications, must be able to successfully complete and maintain CPR, First Aid and AED certification according to the American Heart Association or the American Red Cross requirements, and must be able to maintain their SLEO commission as a condition of employment with the Kentucky State Police.

Applicants shall be disqualified from further participation in the selection process or removed from the register if it is determined that:

• An applicant does not meet any one (1) of the qualifications for appointment as a SLEO.
• An applicant had made a false statement of material fact on the application or in response to any questions or requests for information during the selection process.
• An applicant has used or attempted to use political influence, coercion or bribery to secure an advantage in any phase of the selection process.
• An applicant has cheated during the course of any examination required during the selection process or has attempted to gain an advantage over other applicants by any dishonest or intentionally misleading act or omission.
• An applicant has failed to comply with any instructions for the agency relating to the selection process.
• An applicant has been dismissed for cause from any public agency or has resigned while charges of misconduct were pending.
• An applicant has been convicted of a felony or a crime or moral turpitude.
• An applicant is a current user of a controlled substance, unless prescribed by a physician.
• An applicant is addicted to any controlled substance or intoxicant.
• An applicant has more than six (6) driver demerit points against his/her operator’s license.
• An applicant tests positive for an unlawful controlled substance as determined by a blood or urine analysis.
• An applicant has tattoos that can be seen when wearing the Kentucky State Police Facilities Security winter uniform shirt.

• Typical work schedule may include first, second, or third shift assignments as well as weekends and holidays.
• Due to the nature of the profession, schedules may change to meet the needs of the branch to ensure the protection of life and property. Work is performed primarily indoors with prolonged periods of sitting and standing. Building assignments may require Facilities Security Officers to conduct foot patrols throughout state office buildings and properties. Facilities Security Officers may be subject to high stress environments.

• Agency policy requires that tattoos or body piercings shall not be visible while in any agency issued uniform. Long sleeved training shirts and winter uniform shirts may be issued to applicants with visible tattoos from the elbow to the wrist.

Facilities Security Officers will receive $42,860 annual salary plus $1,680 per diem upon hire. The average salary for the one year probationary period is $44,540.

Upon successful completion of the probationary period, the annual salary increases to equal $46,683 (or $3,890.25 monthly). $46,683 is an average with the base pay ($45,003) plus per diem ($1,680).

Facilities Security Officers may also be eligible for annual raises approved by the Kentucky General Assembly.

Facilities Security Officers are permitted to earn compensatory leave or paid overtime for any hours worked in excess of 40 hours per week.

Facilities Security Officers receive seven (7) dollars per day worked for uniform maintenance.

Facilities Security Officers receive a 10% salary increase with each promotion.

Health Insurance: Facilities Security Officers may choose one of a variety of health insurance plans offered with dependent coverage at an additional charge

Life Insurance: The Commonwealth of Kentucky provides a $20,000 term life insurance policy.

Vacation: Paid vacation time is accrued according to years of service.

• 0-4 years of employment: 12 days per year.
• 5-9 years of employment: 15 days per year.
• 10-14 years of employment: 18 days per year.
• 15 years or more of employment: 21 days per year.

Sick Leave: Facilities Security Officers accrue one sick day for every month worked.

Military Leave: Any Facilities Security Officer who is a member of the military reserve or National Guard is entitled to a maximum of 21 working days per year of paid military leave.

Holidays: Facilities Security Officers receive 12 ½ paid holidays per year. (13 ½ in years with a presidential election).

All Facilities Security Officers are provided uniforms, necessary weapons, and other essential equipment and supplies to perform their duties.
