SMEC and its Alliance partners celebrated a significant milestone in the Murray Basin Rail Project (MBRP) last week. The MBRP Alliance partners, including Regional Rail Revival, ACCIONA AU & NZ and V/Line along with Jared Chesterman Principal Project Manager – Rail from SMEC, joined local community members at Maryborough Station to celebrate the completion of the Ararat-Maryborough Line upgrade. This project is set to increase capacity on the freight network, which is crucial for the Murray Basin region—a major producer of agricultural feed, consumer goods, and building materials. Efficient transportation of these products, which relies heavily on road and rail networks, is vital for the region's economic stability and growth. The event featured the unveiling of artwork on the freight locomotive, painted by acclaimed St Arnaud artist Kyle Torney. His artwork adorned a locomotive transporting locally grown produce across the state's northwest. Over the coming months, you will see this painted locomotive traveling along the Yelta Line. Each train, approximately 1200 meters long, is estimated to transport $600 million worth of produce annually—from local farmers in the Mildura region to the Victorian Ports. Georgia, a jewel of the Caucasus region, is famed for its Black Sea beaches and majestic mountain ranges. But did you know it's also a historical nexus, connecting East and West along the ancient Silk Road? The SJ Group and renowned architectural firm Tashub have come together in a partnership led by our Infrastructure + Energy team, Kawa BAHA, Regional Lead, and Giorgi KAKALADZE, Director of Operations. This marks a monumental step in urban and infrastructure development across the Caucasus. One of the flagship endeavours is the 14-km Batumi Bypass Road project in Batumi, a pivotal port city on a crucial trade and transportation route. This complex project, involving the construction of tunnels, overpasses, and bridges, aims to reduce travel times, alleviate congestion and pollution, and reroute traffic efficiently around Batumi. This project is already making a significant impact through creating jobs for the local workforce, introducing advanced engineering expertise to Georgia, and improving connectivity for residents, tourists, and businesses.

Congratulations to Peter Psarris, Experienced Engineer - Geotechnics at SMEC who presented at the Sydney Chapter of Australian Geomechanics Society’s Young Geomechanical Professionals Night last month. Peter was selected as one of four speakers for the evening and presented on managing geotechnical investigations on Australia Largest Transmission Line – Project Energy Connect. This is a new 700km 330/500kV transmission line and will be the longest new transmission line project constructed in Australia in recent times. The presentation offered insights into the geotechnical investigations for the project, which includes over 800 boreholes, 1200 Cone Penetration Tests, and 400 Electrical Resistivity Tests. It highlighted the logistical challenges of conducting these investigations over a vast linear distance and discussed the various techniques used. To ensure consistent and high-quality investigation data was obtained, SMEC utilised an in-house, digital logging platform which implemented many tangible benefits for the project. Peter’s participation at this event highlighted our engineers’ commitment to continuous improvement and technical excellence. #EngineeringPositiveChange #Geotechnics

The Sydney Metro – Western Sydney Airport’s new metro rail line is set to become the transport spine for Greater Western Sydney, seamlessly connecting communities and travellers to the new Western Sydney International (Nancy-Bird Walton) Airport and the growing region. SMEC and our sister company Robert Bird Group were engaged by CPB Contractors, Ghella to undertake detailed design services for the Station Boxes and Tunnelling package, playing a pivotal role in the realisation of a significant innovation – the design of a ground retention system for a substantial circular maintenance shaft for the Bringelly Services Facility. David Malorey Technical Principal – Geotechnics, stated “I am very proud of the combined effort of the SMEC and Robert Bird Group team and the geotechnical work completed on this part of the new Sydney Metro – Western Sydney Airport. The Temporary Shaft Retention Structures project’s success illustrates our commitment to delivering innovative solutions that extend beyond individual projects, contributing to industry advancements and sustainability goals”.
