As we celebrate World Public Relations today, it is important to note that PR is now in the digital era. Traditional PR is no longer fashionable because the audience today consumes information on digital platforms/channels, the content and its language have changed, it is now multimedia and their attention span is now small. You better be captivating, motivational, inspirational, and attractive. Currently, Governments are struggling with public communications that have moved to digital platforms. They have to evolve and use digital platforms to drive policy advocacy. Executives are now being held accountable on digital platforms. Their availability to engage is no longer optional. They have to show up and get instant feedback. Organizational communications seem to be held accountable from the top. Trust and accountability are key values in organizational communications. Your brand promise is no longer in the products and services but in the character of the organization and its mission and values. As we move into the future, public relations is no longer an option but a critical need for organizations. Your reputation management and projection in the marketplace are equally judged on your participation in social issues including abhorred and unconventional things like politics. Corporates have suffered the wrath of their customers when they are seen to stand on the fence on matters that require social change. Social impact includes supporting good governance and freedoms that affect those societies that are a marketplace for many brands. Stakeholder management, Crisis, and reputation management, and ESG are critical pillars of communications today. As I conclude, that technologies such as AI are supportive tools for PR today. They help us with collecting data, insights and making the right decisions when it comes to observing consumer/stakeholder behaviour. We cannot be left behind in the adoption of AI and Big data technologies. PR without Insights and Big data is like shooting in the air. This is the era to be more intentional and focused on the changes happening in the marketplace and helping brands position themselves in a better way that has a return on investment. #WorldPRDay2024 Public Relations Society of Kenya (PRSK)
