The Africa Pension Supervisors Association was established in September 2019 as a membership association that brings together pension regulators and supervisors from across #Africa to canvass issues of common interest. Last week, in collaboration with the Pensions and Insurance Authority (PIA) of #Zambia, we held a successful two-day conference in Livingstone, Zambia. Under the theme, "Chronicling Africa’s Pension Journey Towards a Dignified Retirement," the gathering provided a platform to review progress in ensuring secure and dignified retirements for all workers across the continent. Last week, we announced the launch of our latest report, "Forecasting Green Jobs in Africa," in collaboration with Shortlist Futures and Boston Consulting Group (BCG). The research forecasts the new direct job creation potential of 12 “green” sub-sectors by #2030, predicting the creation of up to 3 million new green jobs across the continent by #2030. #APSACONF2024 wrap-up: Over the past two days, the 5th Africa Pension Supervisors Association conference, which we co-hosted with the Zambian Pensions and Insurance Authority (PIA), has featured insightful discussions and impactful exchanges between leaders in the pension industry's public and private sectors. On day 1, we analysed #Africa’s pension systems and the reform paths taken by various countries and addressed some of the challenges and opportunities to enhance pension system designs. Participants explored how cutting-edge technologies are revolutionising pension supervision, #RiskManagement and regulatory compliance, sharing best practices and case studies that showcase advances in data analytics and long-term #Sustainability. On day 2, we discussed the impact of #ClimateChange on pension investments and #ESG strategies for sustainability and discovered strategies for extending coverage to underserved groups through innovative products and micro-pension schemes (#FinancialInclusion). As we wound up, we discussed new opportunities and strategies to diversify portfolios and enhance returns and how various stakeholders can address benefits adequacy, post-retirement medical care and quality elder care. #BlendedFinance has the potential to open up new avenues for investment in climate and nature-related projects such as #biodiversity conservation, water management, forestry, and regenerative agriculture. These types of investments are often perceived as high-risk and unattractive to low-risk investors, while their returns are considered inadequately low for those pursuing higher-risk investments. Tomorrow, at the 3rd South Africa Sustainable Finance Intensive (ASFI), Stephen K. Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) are key drivers of growth in African economies, yet they often struggle to access long-term capital. To address this, in partnership with the Capital Markets Authority- Kenya, we are currently co-hosting a two-day workshop on establishing a listed SME debt fund. This fund will enable domestic institutional investors to participate in the markets, fostering a more inclusive financial ecosystem for #MSMEs. The fund, domiciled in #Kenya, will target investments across East Africa using a local currency permanent capital vehicle and a unique blended finance structure to mobilise domestic capital into SME financing.
