The APHRC's Data Science Without Borders (DSWB) project team recently visited Douala General Hospital in Cameroon. The hospital’s extensive electronic health records, generated from various hospital departments, offer an immense opportunity to discover and explore existing datasets, data infrastructure, and opportunities for digitalization, training, and collaboration. During the visit, the team also listened to co-investigators' work and received suggestions for research questions for the DSWB project. This approach is important in empowering local partners to define their research questions and involve clinicians, researchers, and academic partners such as University of Buea (Cameroon) fellows in addressing them using available local datasets. To promote partnerships and knowledge-sharing across African institutions, the #DSWB team invited the Armauer Hansen Research Institute (AHRI) in Ethiopia.. This collaborative effort ensures that knowledge and best practices are shared across different regions, enhancing the overall impact of the DSWB project. The visit to Douala General Hospital (DGH) highlighted the potential for data-driven healthcare improvements through the DSWB project. The enthusiastic response by the medical staff and our partners' collaborative spirit emphasizes the importance of continued support and capacity-building. #DSWB #DataForHealth #WeAreAfrica Africa CDC Armauer Hansen Research Institute Labo Diamniadio à IRESSEF London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, U. of London CODATA Agnes Kiragga Christine Ger Miranda Barasa , Samuel Iddi, PhD Abel Wilson Walekhwa , Steve Cygu Damazo Kadengye Afework Kassu Bethlehem Adnew Luc Baudoin Fankoua Manemik Raïssa Yankam Brenda, Ph.D NGU ASANGA Melissa KWENKEU Bertrand Hugo Mbatchou Ngahane Lifafa Kange, Mary Chiara MBA, MPH-HE

Earlier this year , I was given the opportunity to Chair the Planning and Execution of the 2nd Annual Journal Clubs Exchange #researchexchange with a group of talented young, enthusiastic people like myself. It was my #firsttime being at the helm of planning an event that required Resource Mobilization both material and monetary. It was very interesting planning an event to be held in Nakuru despite not being so familiar with the place. The sleepless nights , constant phone calls , frequent meetings , random minor and major inconveniences that come with event planning were worth it in the end and we hosted #210students across 9 medical schools in Kenya and over 20 speakers. The 2nd Annual JJE took place February 25th - 26th at Egerton University , Nakuru ; in partnership with Kemelsa Association & KEPhSA Kenya A Special Thank You to all the Partners who made this a success : DOCTAB , KEPhSA Kenya, Kenya Malaria Youth Corps, UNISON Medical Centre Rumuruti, African Population and Health Research Center APHRC , KCB Bank Group , CERBA Lancet , Integrated Cancer Research Foundation of Kenya , Ducit Blue Foundation , Students Against Superbugs Africa , PSK - Young Pharmacists Group In attendance were students and faculty members from : Mount Kenya University , SCORE_MKU , Kenya Methodist University , Kenyatta University , MKUMREC , EUREC , KeMUMREC , Maseno University Research Club , SEKU MLS , Moi University Research Club. For the last three days, I have been privileged to facilitate sessions with health experts from the #EastAfricanCommunity in #Burundi to develop a #Pandemic #preparedness and response #policyframework. It is fulfilling to appreciate the deep and rich expertise within our region. It's enriching to note that East Africans are focused on thinking beyond boundaries. With the zero draft in place, we now march on to the country consultations. Adequate #consultations in the policy-making process enhances #ownership and leads to successful implementation African Population and Health Research Center

Data Science Without Borders (DSWB) project team in Ethiopia. This week, APHRC's #DSWB project team engaged in insightful discussions about data sharing and intellectual property, emphasizing the importance of equitable access and shared detailed insights with Armauer Hansen Research Institute (AHRI) on key aspects of the DSWB project, with a focus on: ✔️ The importance of documenting key project milestones ✔️Strategies to enhance project visibility ✔️Developing a six-month project roadmap ✔️Progress towards creating a no-code platform The team also visited ALERT Hospital, one of six referral hospitals selected by Ethiopia's Ministry of Health, to implement an Electronic Medical Records (EMR) system, which has significantly improved patient experiences and reduced treatment times. From the discussions, it was clear that there is great potential for the project to work with the hospital team through AHRI to enhance their data science capacity to maximize the EMR system's potential. The DSWB project demonstrates a strong commitment to leveraging data for health improvements across Africa, demonstrating the potential of digital health initiatives to transform healthcare delivery and improve patient outcomes. #WeAreAfrica
