Such an interesting question, most people just ignore it and move on, never noticing the impact it is having on performance. This "Integrity Workshop" was/is an opportunity for organizational leaders to directly and reliably impact their own performance, the performance of their teams and the overall performance of their organization. Simple, but not easy.

MERICS comment: As China’s labor market is changing it faces severe labor shortages in the digital industry. According to a joint report by Deloitte and Chinese firm Renrui Human Resources Technology in 2023, the AI-industry is short of over 5 million workers, while the smart manufacturing sector will lack 5.5 million qualified workers by 2025. The shortages pose a challenge to China’s digital and manufacturing ambitions and the problem will grow as the work force shrinks due to China’s ageing population. The policy shows that Beijing acknowledges the need to align its education system with industry requirements and to enhance the productivity of its limited workforce in order to address the labor shortage. Therefore, the training broadly covers different groups, including university and vocational school students, engineers and digital talents who are supposed to adjust their skills as well as regular workers to improve “digital literacy.” Overseas expertise remains highly valued for newly emerging sectors. The policy encourages measures to attract both foreign talent and Chinese students who have studied abroad to contribute to China’s digital economy.

TSMC's plan to build seven new plants in 2024 is a strategic move to strengthen its global competitiveness and meet the surging demand for high-performance computing devices and smartphones worldwide. The expansion, which includes three wafer plants and two packaging factories in Taiwan, as well as two additional wafer plants overseas, suggests a shift towards nearshoring and onshoring to mitigate geopolitical risks and ensure reliable supply chain resilience. This investment aligns with the global trend of reshoring and nearshoring to reduce dependencies on overseas suppliers and enhance supply chain agility in the face of growing uncertainties. The diversification of TSMC's manufacturing footprint across Taiwan and other locations reflects the company's efforts to optimize its global supply chain and positioning to better serve its customers in key markets. #GlobalSemiconductorDemand #SemiconductorManufacturing #GlobalChipSupplyChain

Labor market reforms hit the realities of demographic decline and labor market shortages across various segments of Japan. A perfect storm is brewing in Japan that will result in accelerated changes in Japan Inc. Recently Uniqlo announced an initiative to have 80% of their middle management being foreign in the next several years, companies like Toyota have launched new companies to tap into global talent markets and your average convenience store in Tokyo is basically run by at least 50% foreigners (big change for those of us who have been here for 10+ years). With the right mindset and approach, Japan (and Japan Inc.) is one the most interesting B2B opportunities globally right now in my opinion. #talent #reform #japan

🎯 Have you experienced a single moment that transformed the course of your career forever? Here is mine. Years ago, I had my first international business trip. My goal was to pitch to a high-ranking Chinese factory owner, Mr. Li. I was the category manager in charge of sourcing a crucial product for my company. My Director, Matt, a brilliant businessman, accompanied me to the meeting. I entered the meeting confidently. Mr. Li, recognizing Matt's seniority and perhaps because he was male, continued talking to him only. Every time I attempted to respond, Mr. Li turned to Matt to engage further. Then, in a moment that profoundly changed my career, Matt paused the conversation and said, “Mr. Li, you should talk to Kim. She’s the decision maker here, I’m only here for support. It is whatever she says.” The meeting dynamic changed. Since that moment, Mr. Li directed his questions to me. We engaged in a meaningful conversation and landed the supply deal. I walked away with an invaluable lesson in leadership -- Matt wasn't just facilitating a supplier meeting, he was creating power for someone that needed it. Thank you, Matthew Dickinson, for giving me the power that day. You taught me the importance of believing in your people. It’s a lesson I carry with me in every leadership role I undertake. To all leaders out there: never underestimate the impact of your empowerment. A single act can change the course of someone's career forever. P.S. What is a pivotal moment that changed the course of your career? #SupplyChainManagement #Leadership

FRESH GRADUATES, BUT EMPLOYERS REQUIRE 1-3 YEARS OF EXPERIENCE? 🤔 Have you ever wondered why entry-level jobs require 1-3 years of experience from applicants? In fact, a 2021 LinkedIn analysis showed that 35% of all entry-level jobs require three or more years of experience. 📌 This can be difficult for a fresh graduate who has no prior work experience, leading to many graduates working in fields unrelated to their studies or facing long-term unemployment. 🎈 In today's Career Tips topic, PNJ Production will share some tips to help first and second-year students better prepare for the job application process after graduation, and for third and fourth-year students to find the right job they want.

Whereas high-flying executives would once have gladly done a stint in China, today the posting looks more troublesome. Apart from geopolitical concerns, there is the extreme corporate competition in the country. In its recent business climate survey, Amcham China found that one-third of respondents reported that their profit margins based on earnings before interest and tax in China were below their global average while only 19 per cent were above the global average. Fixing the expat gap will be complex. Companies’ global headquarters will need to offer extra incentives both to high-performers outside China to do a stint in the country and to local staff in China to accept assignments outside. This is important partly because of the need to grasp promising opportunities but also compliance. In China, as anywhere, things can go badly off course when a global company loses close oversight of its subsidiaries. Expatriates will not by themselves solve this but they are one channel for instilling global compliance standards. After all, China’s corporate history is littered with foreign businesses caught up in disputes with their local partners, or embroiled in localised corruption cases. That is the kind of decoupling no company wants.

Having read this, I thought I would look at NZ's Top 10 Listed Companies, and how NZ compares. Currently none of the top 10 listed companies were VC backed, although we should acknowledge that Xero was a top 10 (until it migrated to the ASX) and had VC backing. Possibly also PushPay. We fair better than the US and Japan on the average age of the companies with an average start date of 1988. Unfortuantley that masks the fact that 5 of the top 10 are a result of either privatisation (Auckland Airport, Spark), demerger of the electricity networks (Contact and Meridan) and the split up of Fletcher Challenge. Only Infratil and A2 Milk Corproation started in the last 50 years. So I would suggest we are more Japan than the US. Again highlights the challenges of growing and keeping businesses in NZ. Although again to be fair the NZX is not the ideal place for high growth technology companies to list (rocketLab and others are listing offshore).

#time #pressure forces #china to conduct #invasion #war against #taiwan soon because: 1. Demographic tower of China: by 2030 - 2035, 30% of the #chinese population shall be senior citizens. The pressure on social #welfare, economic model, inner social unrest. 2. “Treasure” of Taiwan: TSMC and her #semiconductor production technology 3. In order to invade and control of targeted territory, a portion of 1 soldier / 50 people of the target must be watched out. It means with current size of population of Taiwan (23,6 million), People's Liberation Army must mobilise circa 472,000 soldiers, equiv to 1/5 of the #permanent #army force of mainland China. 4. Unfocus on West Pacific Ocean of US Army in the context of outbreak wars in #Ukraine #Middle #East and potential #Korean #peninsula 5. The depletion of the weapon reservoire of the US Army which had withdrawn to support #Ukraine and now it takes time to pump it back to strategic level. In case the Middle East conflict flame bursts out severely in upcoming days, the reservoir level shall be diminished quickly when US supports Government of Israel and other allies in the region (e.g Turkey, Jordan, UAE, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, etc…) 6. The outdated supply forces of the US Army in #oil-bump aircraft fleets and military oil tanker fleets for example: for a war on Pacific Ocean, US army needs 100 military oil tankers but now the Pentagon only has 10, yeah, you are right “Ten”

China's Manufacturing Activity Hits Highest Level Since 2022 China's factory activity is booming, hitting its highest growth in two years. In May 2024, the Caixin Manufacturing Purchasing Managers' Index (PMI) jumped to 52.8 from April's 51.4. This was better than expected and the best since May 2022. The growth is fueled by a significant increase in production and new orders. Several key factors driving this surge are: - Stronger domestic and global demand - Government policies and infrastructure investments supporting economic growth - Strategic expansion into overseas market The Caixin Manufacturing Purchasing Managers' Index (PMI) is a key economic indicator that measures the health of the manufacturing sector. It is based on a monthly survey of purchasing managers in the manufacturing industry and provides insights into business conditions, including production, new orders, and employment. #chinamanufacturing #globalmanufacturing #chinasourcing #sourcing #supplychain #globlasupplychain
