NASA Releases Cool Jack-O’-Lantern Sun Image

NASA took a photo of the sun in 2014.

As many of you know, I love the NASA website and the images produced by the agency. This week however the folks at NASA out did themselves with this ultra cool, ultraviolet image of the sun resembling a giant flaming jack-o’-lantern. The image from its Solar Dynamics Observatory satellite was released for Halloween.

The photo captures the ultraviolet light from the sun’s active regions from Oct. 8, 2014. NASA explained that “The active regions in this image appear brighter because those are areas that emit more light and energy,. They are markers of an intense and complex set of magnetic fields hovering in the sun’s atmosphere, the corona. This image blends together two sets of extreme ultraviolet wavelengths . . . typically colorized in gold and yellow, to create a particularly Halloween-like appearance.”

Neat trick for Halloween.

Who says scientists do not know how to have a good time?

  1. Very cool. I have to admit that after all these years and at my very advanced age I follow NORAD following Santa Claus every year and wait for him to get to me. 😉

    1. Sintur Klaus. Can be followed at night on the sky on Xmas Eve. Look up and watch for a sleigh.

    2. Paul-come now, we all know you celebrate Saturnalia instead of Xmas, who are you kidding here? 😉

      1. Wally World – since I quit drinking Saturnalia is not near as much fun. 😉
