THE HEALTH BENEFITS OF MUSIC Music is often part of our lives. It can punctuate our day, be discreet, be linked to important moments or moments of rest. It can also surround us without our choosing it (in a shop, for example). But did you know that music plays a vital role in our physiology, our cognitive reactions and our minds, at every age? When I was younger, my Tae Kwon Do teacher at Rhodes University often played rhythmic music during our warm-ups. Music influences the perception of effort and makes you forget how tired you are. This enabled us to last longer during sets and muscle strengthening. Moreover, depending on the music we listen to, it can have a beneficial effect on our sleep. It could make it easier to fall asleep, creating a state of well-being and relaxation through the rhythm and emotions it provokes. It also plays a role in reducing stress and anxiety. When we listen to music, we secrete dopamine (good mood) and endorphins, which act as an anti-depressant. Another effect of music is to stimulate creativity, attention and memory. Playing music is thought to enhance this effect. One of the reasons for this is that music increases the connections between the two hemispheres. There is certainly so much more to share about music that the subject is so vast. I'll end by sharing this concert video - compositions by Jean-Baptiste Lully. https://lnkd.in/esiAWy9u

Incorporating traspie into Milonga requires not only technical skill but also a deep connection to the music and a strong partnership. It's about feeling the rhythm together, anticipating each other's movements, and responding in the moment. This interplay between the dancers and the music is what makes Milonga with traspie an exhilarating experience, both to dance and to witness. Technically, a traspie involves a quick transfer of weight from one foot to the other, executed in sync with the upbeat or syncopated rhythm of the Milonga music. It's akin to a stutter-step, where the dancer appears to stumble or trip lightly, only to recover with grace and continue dancing. This movement can be subtle, merely a quick shift of weight, or more pronounced, involving a small, playful hop or a series of rapid steps. What makes traspie truly enchanting in Milonga is its ability to mirror the music's playful and seemingly unpredictable rhythm allowing dancers to play with timing, speed, and dynamics. When executed with skill and sensitivity to the music, traspie can transform a simple sequence of steps into a lively, engaging dance conversation, full of surprises and shared moments of joy between the dancers. In order to do so, it is necessary to develop a technique based on a different concept of sound from that of the most popular techniques currently in use. These techniques do not contemplate the full use of the volume of sound that the guitar possesses. Based on the "intimate" conception of the instrument from the interpretative tradition of the late 19th and early 20th centuries - represented by Miquel Llobet (1878-1938), taken up by Andrés Segovia (1893-1987) and perpetuated by his acolytes and followers - they disregard an important part of the instrument's sound production and relegate its expressive universe to a "precious" diction that deprives it of the possibility of developing significant dynamic contrasts. With these expectations, the conventional guitar techniques most in vogue cannot effectively address the expressive challenge posed by a performance such as this immense work by Schubert. Playing the fortepiano part of the SONATA "ARPEGGIONE" requires a sound projection superior to that obtained with conventional techniques. The technique I have developed - based on the systematisation of certain mechanical formulas (*) - makes possible a sound capable of dialoguing, on equal terms, with the viola, the cello or the flute, following the innumerable dynamic inflections required by a discourse with dramatic components such as that of this masterpiece of chamber music. (*) See, as a guideline, the fingerings of my versions published in Ed. Boileau (www.boileau-music.com) of Die schöne Müllerin or Winterreise by F. Schubert. The use of extension, the systematisation of the capos, the use of strategies prior to the use of the fingers - among many other resources - make it possible to use greater finger strength without producing undesired sounds or accumulation of muscular tension.

The future is clear: classical music will live – or die – on social media. Or so writes Sophie Carlin in The Telegraph. A growing number of musicians, composers and academics [are] using TikTok to present classical music anew. Young people are there on social media. And they’re listening. A fifth of under-18s want to see more classical music on social media. 18-34-year-olds are six times more likely to follow classical organizations and artists on social media than over-55s. In 2021, a twentieth of 18-34-year-olds watched online videos of orchestral performances; in 2023, it’s an eighth. And for a sense of scale, in February 2024, nearly 20% of the world’s population was on TikTok – just over 1.5 billion monthly active users.
