Sex trafficking makes a business out of sexual violence. According to the Global Estimates for Modern Slavery, in 2022 as many as 6.3 million people were trapped in situations of forced sexual exploitation. Nearly 4 out of 5 of those cases were women and girls. IJM has been helping protect women from sex trafficking in Europe since 2019. We have staff working in the UK, Romania, the Netherlands and Germany. Working with authorities and other partners, and supported by people like you, we bring people to safety and support them with trauma-informed care, bring traffickers to justice, and help strengthen justice systems so people are not abused in the first place. A new study by the Helsinki-based children rights NGO, Protect Children, surveyed over 30,000 online child sexual abuse material (CSAM) offenders and uncovers significant information we should all be aware of. "40% of CSAM offenders have attempted to contact a child. 70% of them sought contact with a child online, mainly through social media, online gaming, or messaging platforms, with Instagram, Facebook, and Discord being the most exploited social media platforms." At MVP Task Force, we have seen this firsthand -- including on private Discord servers and Telegram channels. Furthermore, and to nobody's surprise, the study found that encrypted chat mediums were used, including Telegram, Signal and WhatsApp in conducting illicit activities. Did we leave the men behind? Every year, a 16 day campaign is launched against sexual and gender based violence with different themes and hashtags. #16daysofactivismagainstsbgv #noexcuse Over the period of 16 days, beginning on the 25th of November and ending on the 10th of December yearly, conversations surrounding SGBV is usually centered on the adverse effects of sgbv on women and girls with men usually being confined to the perpetrator narrative. My advocacy for perpetrator accountability yearly never passes without this campaign being questioned. Particularly, how boys and men who are victims of sexual violence are incorporated in this campaign. The little to no attention highlighted on the experiences of boys and men as victims has been justified with the reality that data has proven that more women than men are likely to suffer from SGBV. A counter argument has been that the data we rely on is based on the fact that more women than men are more likely to report these forms of abuses. Hence, the reduction in number may not necessarily be because male victims are few in numbers. Even if they were few, shouldn’t the few 100 cases require some advocacy against it too? My question remains ‘are we leaving the boys and men behind? At what point would we say it’s appropriate to highlight data centered of boys and men as victims of abuse? Does the inclusion of the victim status of boys and men water down the issue of SGBV? I still stand with the millions of women and girls who suffer SGBV and would continue to support advocacy efforts and interventions aimed at protecting them. In that same vein, I am beginning to explore the alternative of partnership and collaboration to eliminate all forms of abuse. Perpetrator accountability transcends gendered narratives and every victim deserves empowerment. Child marriage, female genital mutilation, cruel widowhood rights, rape, defilement and all other forms of abuse predominantly affect women. The violence against them persist and we must work towards accelerating progress to end it as soon as possible. Awáŋyaŋka Wakanjeja, - 'protect our sacred ones (children) is a call to action against the dangers of sex trafficking and cyber exploitation targeting native youth. Traffickers often prey on vulnerable youth through social media, engaging in a process known as grooming. They build relationships online, send gifts or money, and form connections with the intention of exploitation. It's important to recognize that no child or teen wakes up one day aspiring to enter the sex trade industry. Exploitation is never a choice, but rather a result of manipulation and coercion and most times, there was no choice. While we may not always understand the journey that led victims to their circumstances, it's crucial that we unite in the fight against sex trafficking – a modern-day form of slavery. Poverty and Domestic Violence- October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month. I'd like to spotlight an incredible organization that is outstanding, one that I know is truly making a real difference in South Florida. No More Tears is a nonprofit is an organization that provides immediate assistance to domestic violence victims. I first met Somy Ali, the founder of No More Tears, in 2010, and our meeting was nothing short of chance. I was wearing a shirt from her organization, which simply said "Human Being." Two years earlier, I had attended an event called "The Clothesline Project" in Broward to show my support for domestic violence victims. The event I attended had roots dating back to the 1990s when my mother, a courageous survivor, was among the first to break the silence and share her story of domestic violence in Cape Cod Massachusetts. Somy and I exchanged stories, and she inquired about where I got the shirt. When I shared that I had purchased it at the Clothesline Project event, she revealed that No More Tears was the sponsor of that event This connection has spanned over a decade, and I've witnessed firsthand the incredible work that Somy's organization does for countless individuals and their families. Women's history includes countless stories of survivors who have shared their experiences, breaking the silence around domestic violence, and helping others recognize and seek help for abuse. Domestic violence is an alarming issue, affecting far too many families. 20 people per minute are physically abused by an intimate partner in the United States. It's a shocking statistic that highlights the urgent need for support. One in seven women and one in 25 men have been injured by an intimate partner, while one in seven women and one in 18 men have been stalked by an intimate partner during their lifetime. The impact is devastating, and I am asking you to help. Domestic violence is a deeply concerning issue that can affect families across all socioeconomic and racial backgrounds. However, it's important to recognize that the impact of domestic violence compounded by factors such as poverty. Individuals in poverty may face greater economic dependency on their abusers, making it difficult to leave abusive relationships. Financial barriers can include lack of access to affordable housing, transportation, and childcare. Poor families may have limited access to resources and support systems, including legal assistance and counseling services. The Online Sexual Exploiation of Children (OSEC) has become alarmingly more widespread recently. In 2022, the CyberTipline, operated by the National Center for Mission and Exploited Children, received a staggering 31.8 million reports of child sexual abuse material, child sex trafficking, and online enticement—a 47% increase since 2020. These reports came from Electronic Service Providers we use daily such as Facebook, Google, Instagram, Snapchat, and WhatsApp. For several years, Dressember has supported International Justice Mission’s work to end the OSEC in the Philippines. IJM’s Center to End OSEC leverages and shares effective practices and knowledge to enhance justice system and private sector responses to online sexual exploitation, resulting in sustainable child protection and offender accountability.
