How am I, what am I feeling right now? A simple but not easy question that, thanks to the various NTS Social Academy meetings, we have learnt to ask ourselves, giving it the importance it deserves. Today we will talk about boredom, nostalgia and disgust. Boredom is an emotion characterised by the absence of stimuli, resulting in the failure of physiological activation that leads to a search for novelty. Boredom has great evolutionary potential because it allows us to signal to others our propensity to be involved and to ourselves to recover energy before embarking on a new activity. Nostalgia is a complex emotion caused by longing for something that is not present and is perceived as distant. The term is derived from the Greek words nostos, 'homecoming,' and algos, 'pain'. Nostalgia can help reveal what one cannot yet express and shed light on the needs and desires of the present, helping us to cope with new experiences. Disgust is a basic emotion that is intended to prevent adverse events, such as contamination, disease or situations that are not physiological for our bodies. Disgust plays an important evolutionary role, being able to literally keep us alive by avoiding what can be harmful to our bodies. Today we will discuss anxiety, envy, and embarrassment. Anxiety is an emotion characterized by sensations of tension, threat, worry, and physiological changes. Although it shares similar physiological aspects with fear, it differs because, while fear is an emotional reaction to a real and immediate danger, anxiety is an emotional reaction to a perceived future threat. Envy is a complex emotion that arises from social comparison; it is a mix of disturbances: sadness for not being as one would like, and anger towards those who put us in a position to feel like losers. In popular culture, it is associated with the power to harm others. The actions prompted by envy (whether acted out or fantasized) serve this very function: to strike out at others to restore a sense of equality. Embarrassment involves the fear of being judged, but also the feeling of being disconnected and emotionally distant from others. Alongside shame and guilt, it is one of the secondary emotions that develop with an individual’s growth. It is a self-conscious emotion that involves a form of negative self-evaluation in certain social contexts, in the presence of real or imagined observers. This emotion differs from other self-conscious emotions, such as shame, specifically due to the presence of real or imagined potential observers.
