With the release of the updated NZTA M4 specification, we can look forward to an improved information range of the premium basecourse aggregate that should greatly assist with design decision-making. The key for achieving this falls under the NZTA T15 specification for Repeated Load Triaxial (RLT) testing. It's a performance-based test reserved for Class 1 and Class 2 aggregate, with the primary focus of simulating permanent deformation of compacted basecourse under confining pressure (of surrounding pavement) by application of cyclic loading that gradually increases in stress during six stages. While it may be a more frequent test going forward, it's not new. Some of the top labs in New Zealand are using the Matest (Pavetest) universal dynamic system DTS-16 in combination with a large triaxial cell to house 150x300mm samples. The cutting-edge 16-channel CDAS2 controller and TestLab software allow users to breeze through test setup, monitoring and reporting, since the software test method is customised to the T15 specification and further customisation is available on request. Last week I had the pleasure of getting my hands on a Matest gyratory compactor, a research-grade machine that can be used for standard QC. With a true capability of 0-3° compaction angle, it's ideal for NZ's current Austroads specification, as well as future-proofed for ASTM and AASHTO standards. The heavy-duty moulds are built to last and offer peace of mind for the rigorous AASHTO calibration requirements. Based on the U.S. DOT concept, the mechanism precisely gyrates the mould in accordance with the Standards, leaving no doubt the sample is compacted accurately and with repeatable results. Last week Marko Petrovic and I had the pleasure of meeting the Matest team for hands on training and a tour of what can only be described as their formidable facility in Italy. Many thanks to our wonderful Area Manager Patricia Ann SARSON for bringing this all together and being such a great host. I was genuinely impressed at not just the size of the facility, but the high level of stock Matest invest in to support industry with the fastest possible delivery times. The Matest team were welcoming, highly passionate and truly invested in their craft. Our sincere gratitude to the Product Managers for an exceedingly informative and valuable training on the high-end range of products.
