🌡️ During #summer, rising temperatures are particularly concerning in major urban centres: 𝐡𝐞𝐚𝐭 𝐢𝐬𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐬 - a microclimatic phenomenon that leads to higher #temperatures in urbanised metropolitan areas than in suburban ones - can be a #health hazard especially for the weaker population segments. 🛰️ #Geoinformation solutions can provide essential operational support for #ClimateChange adaptation in urban contexts. Within 𝐋𝐈𝐅𝐄 𝐌𝐄𝐓𝐑𝐎 𝐀𝐃𝐀𝐏𝐓, e-GEOS provided Città metropolitana di Milano with detailed mapping of #HeatIslands based on #satellite data. The project has been crucial in developing #sustainable approaches to overheating protection, significantly increasing #climate awareness among local politicians and general public. 🥇 #LIFEMETROADAPT was awarded by the European Commission as the best European #LIFE project in 2023, and was presented at the Italian Pavilion of #COP28 in #Dubai. 🔥 As it does every #summer, the European Commission’s 𝐂𝐨𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐧𝐢𝐜𝐮𝐬 𝐄𝐦𝐞𝐫𝐠𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐲 𝐌𝐚𝐧𝐚𝐠𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐒𝐞𝐫𝐯𝐢𝐜𝐞 𝐑𝐚𝐩𝐢𝐝 𝐌𝐚𝐩𝐩𝐢𝐧𝐠 - led by e-GEOS - is operating at full force to provide #emergency mapping of #wildfires that have occurred across #Europe. 🗺️ During June and July 2024, there were a total of 11 wildfire activations, in response to which the #RapidMapping team produced more than 25 maps to provide information on #fire extent and damage assessment. ❤️🌍 Today we embark on the eighth journey of 𝐋𝐨𝐯𝐞 𝐏𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐞𝐭 𝐄𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐡 2024! ���🇺 August's destination is 𝐌𝐚𝐜𝐪𝐮𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐞 𝐈𝐬𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐝, #Australia. Its remote, windswept #landscape is an outstanding sight of #wild, natural beauty combined with a variegated #wildlife. The #island - classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1997 - is the only place on #Earth where the rocks of the Earth's mantle are actively exposed above #sea level. 🐾 Macquarie Island is the habitat of the 𝐑𝐨𝐲𝐚𝐥 𝐏𝐞𝐧𝐠𝐮𝐢𝐧, last assessed for the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species in 2021. The Royal Penguin breeds only on #Macquarie Island, both on the coast and up to 1.5 km inland, and on #Bishop and #Clerk Islands. Formerly assessed as Vulnerable, it is now no longer considered a threatened species. We will team up with Serco Italia (Prime Contractor), CGI and MEEO S.r.l on this project!   🌦️ Our role, specifically, is the implementation of the Hydro-Meteo-Climate Digital Twin.
