IMD forecast today: Heavy rain in Maharashtra, Karnataka, Goa and Arunachal; orange alert in Assam, Meghalaya

The weather department has issued a rainfall alert for Uttarakhand on July 9, predicting moderate to heavy downpour accompanied by lightning and thunderstorms. The alert intensifies for specific districts in the state, with the IMD forecasting even heavier rainfall in Tehri, Pauri, Bageshwar, Almora, Nainital, and Champawat on July 10.

IMD has issued an orange alert for some parts of Meghalaya, Nagaland, Arunachal Pradesh, West Bengal, Sikkim, Assam, Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura, Maharashtra, and Karnataka amid moderate to heavy rains expected this week.

Delhi may expect light rainfall, with the IMD predicting isolated moderate to heavy rains in parts of the city. The minimum temperature in the city settled at a comfortable 28 degrees Celsius on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, heavy rains continued in Maharashtra. Mumbai and Pune remained on high alert after the IMD issued a red alert on Monday. Schools and colleges in both cities were shut down on Tuesday as a precautionary measure due to the downpour and waterlogging. Similar scenes unfolded in Raigad, where educational institutions were also forced to close.

Data showed that the Santacruz recording station registered 268mm rain, even as the Colaba centre registered only 84mm between Sunday and Monday morning. This paved the way for the city setting the record for the highest 24-hour period rainfall recorded since 2019, when the suburbs recorded 375.2mm rain within 24 hours on July 2.
