Windows Notepad, the 41-year plain text editor, is getting some new features that will make it more useful for users who still prefer the old and simple user interface. While the addition of spell check and autocorrect functionalities won’t bring it up to the new and fancy text editors in terms of looks and features, they are a pretty useful addition to the barebones app we all are used to.
As you would expect, spell check works by showing a small wiggly red line under the word that the app thinks is misspelt while the autocorrect feature will automatically fix a word it thinks is a typo. However, those using Notepad to copy a piece of code or text typed in some other language should disable the functionality as it will be at risk of getting autocorrected.
For some reason, Microsoft seems to have enabled these features by default, so you have to disable them from the app settings. Similar to Microsoft Word and other apps, you also have the option to add the word to your dictionary. The tech giant seems to have a safe approach when it comes to Notepad by barely adding any new features to the plain text editor.
However, the app did get some new notable additions like a character counter, the option to zoom into text and find and replace text. A few years ago, Microsoft also added a tabbed interface to make Notepad more user-friendly, but since its introduction in 1983, the app has offered more or less the same experience.
