Snap Inc., the parent company of Snapchat is recalling all of its pocket-sized Pixy drones and warning users to stop using its product or charge the battery pack because of a fire hazard. The news comes as the United States Consumer Product Safety Commission received “four reports of the battery overheating and bulging, resulting in one minor battery fire and one minor injury.”
Instead of recalling the battery pack, which was sold separately, Snap Inc. is asking users to send back the drone as well because the company isn’t making the batteries anymore. Consumers who have the product can visit the official Pixy website to see how they can send back the drone and dispose of the battery.
First spotted by The Verge, it looks like Snap Inc. is refunding the full amount for the drone as well as any battery packs. The company says consumers will get a refund of at least $185 while those who purchased the ‘flight pack’ can get up to $250.
Launched in April 2022, the pocket-sized drone takes off and lands from the user’s hand and lets you take selfies and record short videos. All pictures and videos taken by the drone are automatically uploaded to Snapchat Memories.
To use the drone, one only needs to press a button and decide if they want the camera drone to hover, follow or orbit them. It has a 12MP sensor and comes with 16GB storage with a full charge supporting somewhere between five to eight flights that are ten to twenty seconds long.
The company had planned to make a sequel of the drone, but Snap Inc. CEO Evan Spiegel announced four months later that they were done with Pixy and stopped further development of the project.
