Portugal vs France, EURO 2024 Highlights: France defeat Portugal via penalties, book semis clash vs Spain

After the drama of the penalty shootout ends, the camera catches sight of Ronaldo standing by himself looking very emotional. This is his last European Championship, so that's understandable. But the pther Portugal veteran, Pepem is inconsolable. He makes his way to Ronaldo and sobs after burying his head into Ronaldo's chest.

What drama! Hernandez coolly scores his penaty into the top corner to take France into the semi-finals. They will take on Spain in the semis, after the Spanish side defeated hosts Germany in the first quarter-finals. 

Nuno Mendes with all the pressure in the world keeps Portugal in the hunt by slotting his penalty in! But France can win it with their next penalty!

The Portugal versus France game will be decided via a penalty shootout after all. 

Roberto Martinez and Didier Deschamps giving rousing speeches to their wards in their respective huddles.

Portugal charge forward with less than a minute left in the extra time. Nuno Mendes gets the ball just inside the 18-yard box. But his low shot is caught by the keeper. And then France break loose at the the other end. But even they cannot do a whole lot.

It seems inevitable that this game gets decided by penaty shootout. 

Both teams are now cutting tired figures but they're still prodding and probing for a goal. 

We're minutes away from a penalty shootout deciding who wins this game.  

So Mbappe's replacement, Bradley Barcola, waltzes his way into the Portugal box after edging past three defenders. Finally, when the goal is in sight, he shoots wide!

And we have some important news, Kylian Mbappe has been substituted. Bradley Barcola is on the pitch and Kante has the captain's armband.

Portugal are playing in the extra time for a second successive game. France have come closest to scoring, hitting the frame of the goal through Camavinga and Dembélé. But we are still goalless. Which means this game will be decided in extra time of two 15-minute halves. If we cannot find a winner there also, we head to penalties. 

Mbappe takes a shot and it flies between three Portugal defenders, but Diego Costa is there at hand to collect. A few seconds later, the referee blows the whistle for full time.

We will have extra time to figure out who meets Spain in the semi-finals.

Things getting so desperate that even Kante is taking a shot at the Portuguese goal after a break from the French team! and after Diego Costa calmly collects the low shot, you can sense Mbappe who was in a good position after making a run, will have raised an eyebrow at Kante. 

Kante seems not to care. A few minutes later, he takes one more shot at the goal. Once again, it ends in the hands of the keeper Costa.

Frantic action now on the pitch as we enter the last 10 minutes. Both sets of players are throwing themselves on the pitch in wild tackles as they prevent the other team from sneaking a goal at the end. 

Finally, there is a break in action as Saliba concedes a free-kick by fouling Francisco Conceição of Portugal.

Another chance for France and again it's Diego Costa who plays a role. 

Camavinga gets the ball just 10 yards away from the goal after some good work from a teammate on the right flank to beat two defenders. 

Costa rushes towards Camavinga, who shoots but his shot is not even on target. 

After 69 minutes, POR 0-0 FRA

Once again, it's Diego Costa who keeps Portugal in this match. Kolo Muani has a shot on goal after being release on the centre on the pitch. But Costa starts to rush out to close off the angles. And it works. Muani's shot hits the foot of Costa and bounces away from goal quite harmessly. 

What a contribution Diego Costa has made under the bar so far. 

After 66 minutes, POR 0-0 FRA

Mbappe takes a shot straight on his face and he is led away by the French team's physio.

The ball was looped into the France box and it's Bernardo who rises and heads the ball towards the centre of hte box. Mbappe has tasked himself with marking Bernardo and he blocks the header: only, he's taken the ball flush in his face. And Mbappe is led off the pitch. 

But soon we learn that Mbappe is fine. Bernardo comes to check on his former Monaco team-mate Mbappé.

Kylian Mbappe and Kante indulge in a one-two on the edge of the Portugal box, before Mbappe lets fly a shot on the target. But it flies at Diego Costa.

Alright, here we go! The second half of the game is here. 

France have sparkled in bursts when attacking in the first half. But Portugal's defence has truly been the immovable object standing in front of the French unstoppable force, led by Mbappe. Besides Mbappe, Griezmann and Camavinga have dome most of hte beavy lifting for France.

Not too many clear-cut chances in the first half. And it understandably ends goalless. 

After enduring sustained pressure on their goal, Portugal are finally staring to grow into this game. It's Rafael Leão who has been the workman for the Iberian team on the flanks, trying to make something happen. 

Still goalless though as we near half-time. 

And France break free, as Kylian Mbappé is released on the right flank by Kanté with a ball that should not have resulted into anything. But Mbappe decides to make something out of this. He gives chase and brushes aside Nuno Mendes out of his way. Mbappe almost reaches the byline and then turns to look for a teammate. There’s no one there. What a waste!

Portugal keeper Diego Costa has been a busy man!

He wards off a cross from Mbappe from the left flank after the frenchman beat his marker with a couple of stepovers. Then, Hernandez gets the ball and decides to let the ball fly. But his 127 km/hr thunderbolt is palmed away by the keeper.

This time it's Bruno Fernandes who has a chance. 

He gets the ball in space and tries to try his luck, but his low shot is deflected wide right for a corner. Right after that, Ronaldo gets a little too exhuberant is tryign to shrug off his marker and ends up squandering away the set piece due to a foul on Hernández.

After enduring sustained pressure on their goal, Portugal finally have a chance of their own. It's Leao who releases Mendes on the left flank. Leao looks like he's in two minds, whether to cross or to shoot, and he ends up doing half of both. He takes a looping half-shot from the edge of the box which flies pointlessly outside for a goal kick since there are no Portugal players in the box.

France are running riot here! They have laid this Portugal goal under seige now. But still no goals and that's the only stat that matters. Les Bleus players are finding teammates at will. In the early stages of this game, Griezmann has been right at the heart of the action in this central role just behind the front two of Mbappé and Kolo Muani.
