‘Relief’, ‘the fight continues’: France players react to election results ahead of EURO 2024 semifinal

France players who will be in action at the EURO 2024 semifinal in Munich on Tuesday, took to social media after a leftist coalition of the New Popular Front averted the proposition of a far-right government led by the National Rally in the parliament elections on Sunday.

Players from the France football team, currently featuring at the EURO 2024 tournament in Germany, took to social media to celebrate the election results in their home country on Sunday.

According to reports, the Left’s New Popular Front is projected to win approximately 177-212 seats out of the 577 seats in the lower house of the parliament. This has dismissed the proposition of a far-right National Rally-controlled government, despite them acquiring the largest vote share.

France skipper Kylian Mbappe was one of the vocal critics of the political situation during the group-stages of the European Championship. “It’s an urgent situation,” Mbappe told last week in Hamburg after the National Rally won 33 percent of the popular vote in the first round. “We cannot let our country fall into the hands of these people. It is pressing. We saw the results, it’s catastrophic. We really hope it’s going to change: that everyone is going to rally together, go and vote, and vote for the correct party.”

Following the results on Sunday, more players took to their social media handles and reacted to the developments.

Festive offer

‘Relief’

France defender Joules Kounde, who has voiced his political opinions frequently on social media, expressed his relief on X.

“The relief is as great as the anxiety of the last few weeks. Congratulations to all the French people who mobilized to ensure that this beautiful country of France would not be governed by the far-right.”

The Dembele smile

Forward Ousmane Dembele did not share any words pn social media, but put up his smiling picture, shortly after the snap election results were announced.

France face Spain in the Euro 2024 semifinal in Munich on Tuesday, eyeing their fourth major-tournament final across eight years.
