This is Sudha Murty’s mantra to bring down ‘buying desire’: ‘Lower the cost, you use more’

Over a period of time, that desire to own is not there with me, shared Sudha Murty in a throwback video

Trust Sudha Murty to always lead the way when it comes to sharing some wisdom nuggets. The author and philanthropist have often spoken about consumerism and how it devoids us from real happiness and contentment. Addressing the need to curb consumerism, she once again spoke about the need to cut down on unnecessary buys.

“If you buy a sari of Rs 7,000, will I wear it 7,000 times? No. It is inversely proportional. If it is Rs 2,000 sari, I can wear it at least 20 30, or 50 times. Lower the cost, you use more. That’s the reality. Over a period of time, that desire to own is not there with me,” she once shared.

According to her, the greed to own makes us shop for more than what we ideally should. “It is the greed to own. I own some 20 pairs of chappals. Actually, you use only one pair at a time. If you analyse that, your buying desire comes down. That’s what I’ve done in my life,” she candidly confessed in a snippet shared by Pranav Sikri.

Does it truly work?

Sivan Santhosh, co-founder, Neytt, Extraweave from a sustainability-focused rugs brand told indianexpress.com that he does agree but “not completely”. “Her perspective works for clothes but not everything. If I buy something expensive which I can wear daily like a watch or a belt, I tend to use it several times. Even if I have other watches, I tend to use them regularly. And it works much differently for something like a hand-knotted rug. It’s very expensive to buy but you end up using it for generations. It’s like buying a Rolex which you hand over to the next generation and it goes on till the end of its life. It’s very subjective too on people, of course,” Sivan expressed.

He also shared a few tips when it comes to exploring sustainability. “For me, living sustainably is all about buying less but shopping high-quality and something made ethically (causing less harm to the environment), and that lasts more,” said Sivan.
