Summer’s scorching temperatures can leave you feeling drained and dehydrated. Watermelon juice, a refreshing and readily available drink, can be a tempting solution. But what happens to your body if you make it your daily summer beverage?

G Sushma, Clinical Dietician at CARE Hospitals Banjara Hills, breaks down the benefits and potential drawbacks of this summertime staple.

What are the benefits?

Watermelon juice is more than just a thirst quencher. It’s packed with vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants that offer a range of health advantages, according to Sushma:

Timing is key

While watermelon juice is a refreshing treat any time, Sushma suggested it’s best enjoyed in the morning or afternoon, ideally between 10 am and 12 pm. This timing optimises hydration and nutrient absorption.

It can also be a pre or post-workout drink, as the electrolytes replenish lost energy, and citrulline might help with muscle soreness.

Daily dose: Pros and cons

While watermelon juice is a fantastic summer hydrator, promoting activity, healthy blood pressure, and even preventing inflammation and allergies, moderation is key, according to Sushma. Here’s why:

Sugar Spike: Natural sugars in watermelon juice can cause blood sugar spikes, especially for those with diabetes or pre-diabetic conditions.

FODMAP Factor: Watermelon is high in FODMAPs (sugars that can cause digestive discomfort like bloating, gas, and cramping). People with irritable bowel syndrome or sensitive digestion should be cautious.

Before incorporating daily watermelon juice into your summer routine, consult your doctor. They can advise you on the appropriate amount based on your individual health needs, Sushma said

Who should avoid it?

While generally safe, watermelon juice might not be suitable for everyone, Sushma said. It’s best to avoid it if you have:

  • Low blood sugar
  • Skin rash sensitivity
  • Watermelon allergy
  • Irritable Bowel Syndrome
  • FODMAP sensitivity

Watermelon juice is a delicious and hydrating summer drink, but moderation is crucial. Remember, a balanced diet with a variety of fruits and vegetables is essential for optimal health.
