Kuki group calls for 12-hour shutdown against arrest of three

At least five women also sustained injuries when the security forces fired tear gas shells to disperse a group who tried to prevent the arrest, said the sources quoted above. The Kuki Inpi Manipur (KIM), an apex group of the Kuki tribes, on Tuesday called for a 12-hour shutdown on Wednesday in all the areas inhabited by the Kuki-Zo to protest the arrest of three members from their community.

A statement from the group said: “Total shutdown in all Kuki-Zo dominated regions on Wednesday to protest against the gross injustice meted out to our people.” “Subsequently, all Kuki-Zo regional organisations are urged to strictly abide by this resolve to express solidarity for the common cause of our people, the fight against the unlawful oppression, subjugation and persecution of our people and our legitimate demand for Union Territory with Legislature for the Kuki-Zo people,” it said.

According to sources, the three people were arrested with four weapons. Later in the evening, people took out a rally in Kangpokpi district demanding the release of the three people arrested.
