Bahrain’s Prime Minister has reportedly offered financial help to the family of Dana Majhi, who had carried his wife’s body on his shoulders over 12 km.
“The (Bahraini) PM responded to media reports on the episode and made an offer for humanitarian assistance. He has decided to make a contribution but we have not yet received official confirmation on the amount of money or when it will be made,” a source in the Indian embassy there said.
On Sunday the Gulf Daily News reported, “His Royal Highness Prime Minister Prince Khalifa bin Salman Al Khalifa read about the man, who carried his wife’s body for 12 km after the hospital where she died allegedly failed to provide an ambulance for her to be sent back to their village… The Premier was so upset by the news that he felt he had to do something to help. He could not just stand by and do nothing about such suffering.”
“The Prime Minister’s office contacted Bahrain’s Indian Embassy, and, in an extraordinary humanitarian gesture, has donated a sum of money to help the man and his family,” the daily said.
After his wife Amangdei died of tuberculosis at Kalahandi district headquarters hospital in Bhawanipatna on Wednesday, Majhi, a tribal, reportedly sought help from the hospital staff in carrying the body back to his village 60 km away. When they allegedly refused help, Majhi carried the corpse for 12 km until a reporter arranged an ambulance for him.
