Chief Justice of India D Y Chandrachud Tuesday said he had directed listing of a PIL seeking probe into the stampede at a religious congregation in Hathras in Uttar Pradesh which left 121 people dead. “I have ordered listing of the plea yesterday (Monday) itself,” the CJI said as the PIL petitioner advocate Vishal Tiwari brought the fact of filing of the PIL to the court’s notice and requested urgent hearing.
The PIL sought a probe by a five-member expert committee under the supervision of a retired Supreme Court judge. It also sought a direction to the Uttar Pradesh government to submit a status report on the July 2 incident, to initiate legal action against the authorities, officials and others for their negligent conduct and to frame necessary guidelines so that such incidents are not repeated.
