Jatt and Juliet 3 movie reviewJatt and Juliet 3 movie review: Jatt and Juliet 3 relies heavily on Diljit’s charisma and humour to carry things through. And it works, for the most part.

Diljit Dosanjh and Neeru Bajwa’s Jatt & Juliet 3 does what Punjabi cinema does best — delights audiences with nutty situations, punchy one-liners, and dollops of humour, which makes for an enjoyable family entertainer. Bringing back the Diljit Dosanjh and Neeru Bajwa jodi, the beloved franchise is now helmed by writer-director Jagdeep Sidhu, who has taken over the reins from Anurag Singh, and has collaborated with Dosanjh on Sher Bagga (2022) and Shadaa (2019) previously.

Fateh Singh (Diljit Dosanjh) and Pooja (Neeru Bajwa) are police constables, but she is his senior. Both have their own selfish reasons for wanting to get married to each other and deceive the other about their true intentions. However, things don’t pan out as planned and threaten to spin out of control when Jasmin Bajwa (Daisy) enters the picture. She is wanted for committing fraud and Pooja and Fateh are sent to London to bring her back. In the midst of it all, Fateh is solely concerned about money and spins a yarn for both Daisy and Pooja.

Playing the lovable rogue once again, he is all for bending the rules and she is a stickler for them. The two find novel ways of locking horns with each other, a theme that persists from the earlier films.

Jatt & Juliet 3 relies heavily on Diljit’s charisma and humour to carry things through. And it works, for the most part. The first half focuses on the courtship of Fateh and Pooja and although the jokes keep things moving along, the pace starts to slacken. The subplot involving Daisy is again engaging but then the climax becomes long-drawn.

Festive offer

Jagdeep Sidhu made his mark with the tragic romances Qismat (2018) and Sufna (2020), and his writing weaves in a sensitivity to gender in each of his films, even the comedies. Jatt & Juliet 3 is no different and through different scenes, he creates the space for at least mentioning issues like dowry, the negotiations of working women post-marriage, and the cultural bias against older women.

The problem with Jatt & Juliet 3 is that there are too many issues that get packed in together at the end. From a comment on the current state of Punjab and unemployment of its youth, bribery and red tape, to the pathetic state of policemen and a reflection on why Punjabis are eager to get out of the country, and a message of unity squeezed in as well, there are just too many ideas bunched up together, which dilutes the messaging.

In 2012, when Jatt & Juliet released, Punjabi cinema was starting to wake up from a long slumber. The blockbuster success of the film, along with Gippy Grewal’s Carry on Jatta (2012) in the same year, gave a new lease of life to the industry, paving the way for its stupendous growth in the years to come.

The USP of the Jatt & Juliet films has been its playful comedy and the irrepressible charm of Diljit Dosanjh. Twelve years after the release of Jatt & Juliet, Diljit Dosanjh is a global star and Neeru Bajwa reigns over the industry. As the actor who has gone where no other turbaned Sikh has gone before, he seems unstoppable. He carries the film on his chiseled shoulders and his performance is self-assured as he plays Fateh Singh with mischievous delight.

Playing the perfect foil to Fateh Singh is Pooja, a character that Bajwa has perfected over the years. Jasmin Bajwa pales in comparison to the veteran actors but manages to hold her own. One of the most beloved characters, Shampy (Rana Ranbir) and his father (BN Sharma), continue their hilarious antics, and veteran comedians BN Sharma and Nasir Chinyoti keep the audience in stitches with their excellent comic timing. The peppy music is definitely a highlight of the film, with the songs “Haye Juliet”, “Lehenga”, “Jattiye Punjab Diye”, and “Sheraan Da”, stealing the show.

An overall enjoyable entertainer, Jatt & Juliet 3 has high-spirited humour, witty one-liners, good performances and foot-tapping music. The audiences are sure to show their love.
