‘Anupam Kher was doing 60 films at same time, Shashi Kapoor was called taxi as he would many shifts in the same day’

Film stars would take up multiple films at once but Anupam Kher, who was the most popular supporting actor of the time, was once doing 60 films at the same time in the 1990s.

Indian cinema is over a 100 years old now but there was a time just 30 or so years ago when Hindi films were made with absolutely no planning. In a recent interview, film critic Anupama Chopra, who was a film journalist in the 1990s, said that the Cine and TV Artistes Association had to actually issue a guideline saying that an actor could only take up either 12 or 14 films at a time. Chopra said that this was done because actors would be doing three to four shifts a day and this was causing massive delays and increased costs.

“There was a diktat from the Cine Artistes Association that you can only do either 12 or 14 films at a time,” she recalled in a chat with Tried & Refused Productions. She shared that Anupam Kher, who was possibly the most popular supporting actor of this era, was doing 60 films at the same time. “At one point, Anupam Kher was doing 60 films at a time. So at that time they used to say you can’t make movies without raw stock and Anupam Kher,” she shared.

Aamir Khan, who had established himself as a star in the 1990s was, in fact, the first film star to declare that he would be doing only one film at a time. While he was seen as an outlier at that time, the trend caught on with most leading stars. “Aamir was the one who said ‘No, I am going to do one film at a time’. People thought he was mad,” he said.

She also shared that even in the 1970s, there was this trend of doing multiple films at once and it was because of this that Shashi Kapoor came to be known as “taxi” because he would be doing one shift after another and would take a taxi from one studio to next, change his clothes and start shooting.

Festive offer

Earlier, at the Critics’ Choice Awards 2023, Ajay Devgn had shared something similar where he said, “Honestly speaking, there was a point in my life in the 90s… Today we do one film at a time, at that time we used to do 14-15 films at a time. We used to do four shifts, and five to six hour shifts. We used to go at 7 in the morning for work, shoot till about 12 on one set, and in the same pair of jeans go to the other set. We just used to change the jacket or the shirt and shoot four-five hours.”
