The Pune Municipal Corporation’s (PMC) claims of having improved roads to prevent waterlogging during the monsoon have fallen flat and residents are accusing the administration of having a lacklustre approach to addressing their concerns.
When it rained on Monday evening, the civic administration’s poor-quality road work was exposed, residents said. Morning walkers witnessed waterlogging on the road connecting the Mhatre bridge to the Rajaram bridge in Erandwane on Tuesday.
Following complaints about storm-water drains, the civic administration had laid pipes and dug up footpaths to connect water outlets to storm-water drains to prevent waterlogging. However, water continued to be collected on the roads. In some places, chambers of storm-water drains were reconstructed in a way that they were above the surface of the road. So water got surrounded around the chambers instead of getting drained.
“The PMC administration had claimed that it had identified the waterlogging spots and done necessary improvement work. However, the work done on the road connecting the Mhatre bridge to the Rajaram bridge was of poor quality and this was pointed out to the civic administration. Last evening’s rain exposed the work,” said Vivek Velankar, a civic activist.
