MU to have full-time deans for all faculties

Dr. Vijay Pawar, President of Maharashtra’s Union of Secular Teachers (MUST) said, “This is almost after a decade that Mumbai University has issued an advertisement to fill posts. Currently there are deans, but they are working on the post as an additional charge, apart from their full-time job. But under NEP, which includes development of curriculum, creation of content etc, the volume of work is huge. This requires qualified individuals with full-time dedication.”

“All other state universities have already appointed full-time deans. Mumbai University has finally started the process,” he added.

As per the Maharashtra Public University Act 2016, dean of faculty is a full-time post, unlike the conventional practice of senior professor or principal level teacher taking up the responsibility as additional-charge.

“Even as the Act was implemented, selection of deans on MU was as per the conventional practice. This recruitment was long overdue. After required approvals from the government it has now started,” said an official.

The official added that appointment of full-time deans will play a crucial role in development of curriculum and course content under the NEP.
