Overnight torrential rains on Sunday led Mumbai to wake up to knee-deep water in several parts of the city, property damage and traffic chaos on a Monday morning. Regular life was thrown out of gear, prompting the Eknath Shinde-led state government to call a review meeting and take corrective measures to ease the situation. Here is what all happened in the city since it began raining like cats and dogs.

268 mm of rainfall in 24 hours — the highest since 2019

The Santacruz observatory, one of the two base weather stations, recorded 268mm of rainfall over 24 hours till 8.30 am Monday, making it the highest 24-hour spell recorded in Mumbai since 2019.

Road, air, rail transport crippled

The rains severely affected transportation as local train services were hit due to water surfacing on tracks. Train services on the fast line of the Central Railway’s (CR) main corridor between Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) in south Mumbai and neighbouring Thane were suspended for a few hours due to waterlogging at various places and later resumed, news agency PTI reported. The CR officials also asked people to avoid travelling unless unavoidable.

The road traffic also came to a halt as snarls were witnessed on major roads, including the Sion-Panvel Highway near Mankhurd (Mumbai’s gateway to Navi Mumbai).
