MMRDA proposes missing link to streamline traffic at BKC One Junction and connector

In an effort to streamline traffic congestion at the Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC) connector and BKC One Junction, the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has proposed a new link that will connect Plot C-80 to Plot C-79, located below the BKC connector, stretching from the SEBI building to Avenue 5 (BKC connector road) and Avenue 3 (WeWork).

According to MMRDA, the new route will offer signal-free movement, reducing travel time. This new link will distribute traffic across three alternative routes, resulting in faster and more efficient traffic dispersal. Additionally, it will provide uninterrupted connectivity to vehicles coming to and from the BKC connector and the National Stock Exchange (NSE), allowing smoother dispersal towards G-Block of the Mumbai Cricket Association, consulates, MTNL, and other key locations.

The MMRDA had previously constructed the elevated BKC connector between Bandra-Kurla Complex’s G Block and the Eastern Express Highway (EEH) to enhance accessibility. This connector—opened to traffic on November 10, 2019—serves as the shortest route between Western Express Highway (WEH) and EEH compared to Santacruz Chembur Link Road and Sion-Dharavi-Kalanagar. Consequently, it experiences heavy traffic during peak hours, causing significant congestion on internal BKC roads.

Currently, all traffic passing through the BKC connector navigates the 18-metre narrow road at BKC via J-17 junction in front of the Punjab National Bank road, leading to congestion at both BKC One junction and BKC connector. The proposed link aims to mitigate this congestion by providing an additional route, said MMRDA officials.

The new road will be a three-lane concrete road in both directions, with footpaths on either side. The MMRDA has invited bids for the construction work, which is estimated to cost approximately Rs 3.97 crore. The last date for bid submission is July 19.
