The Uttar Pradesh government claimed to have rescued 87 people who were stranded in floodwaters in Shravasti and Kushinagar districts, in the wake of a sudden release of more than 5 lakh cusecs of water from different barrages after heavy rain in Nepal.
Of the rescued people, 76 are from Kushinagar and 11 from Shravasti, according to a press release issued by the state government. Also, nearly 400 residents from 18 villages of Shravasti were moved to safer places while 20 cattle trapped in floodwaters in Kushinagar were rescued, it was claimed.
Chief Minister Yogi Adiyanath on Sunday spoke to the district magistrates of Shravasti and Kushinagar to get an update on the situation and directed the two to conduct a survey of the crop damage and submit a report to the government within 24 hours, the press release said. He also ordered government officials to provide immediate compensation upon receiving the survey report.
The CM said that officials should visit the affected areas, monitor the relief efforts and help distressed people. The authorised relief amount be promptly provided to families who suffered loss of life due to the disaster, he added.
Financial aid should also reach immediately to those who suffered damage to their homes or loss of livestock, the CM said.
Relief Commissioner GS Naveen said around 8 pm on Saturday, the state-level emergency operations centre received information about 11 people, including five women and three kids, being trapped in floods due to a sudden release of water from Nepal in Shravasti’s Jamunha tehsil. The district administration and Provincial Armed Constabulary (PAC) teams conducted a rescue operation for eight hours to evacuate all the persons, he added.
“The emergency operations centre received information that 5.71 lakh cusecs of water was being released from Devghat barrage due to heavy rain in Nepal. The Kushinagar administration was notified about potential release of 3 lakh cusecs of water from Balmiki Nagar barrage,” GS Naveen said.
