Private varsity in Gorakhpur gets council nod for MBBS course

According to registrar Dr Pradeep Kumar Rao, the first year will see admissions for 50 MBBS seats, with plans to increase this number in the second and third phases.

THE SHRI Gorakhnath Medical College Hospital and Research Centre of Mahayogi Gorakhnath University Arogyadham, a private university in Gorakhpur, was on Saturday granted MBBS course accreditation by the National Medical Council (NMC).

Admissions and studies for the MBBS course in the university would commence this session through NEET counselling, officials said.

The university is managed by the Maharana Pratap Education Council and Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath is its Chancellor.

Since 2021, the Guru Shri Gorakhnath Institute of Medical Sciences has been running courses in nursing, paramedical, pharmacy, and BAMS.

MBBS seats approved for the first session. The university Vice-Chancellor and registrar said the plan would entail three phases. In each phase, a 600-bed hospital will be constructed, totalling 1,800 beds.

This medical college, established by Maharana Pratap Shiksha Parishad within Mahayogi Guru Gorakhnath Vishwavidyalaya, is also a dream project of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath.

According to registrar Dr Pradeep Kumar Rao, the first year will see admissions for 50 MBBS seats, with plans to increase this number in the second and third phases.

People from Gorakhpur, Basti, and Azamgarh divisions, as well as western Bihar and the Terai region of Nepal, will benefit from the 1800-bed multi facility hospital and 24/7 service. The Vice-Chancellor pointed out that this will be the first private sector medical college in Gorakhpur, following those in Varanasi and Lucknow.

It will be the third major medical institution in the city, alongside AIIMS Gorakhpur and Baba Raghav Das Medical College Gorakhpur. Registrar Dr. Rao mentioned that two committees, one at national and another at international levels, are collaborating for the establishment and development of the medical college as a model institution.
The committee will primarily focus on fostering academic partnerships with leading institutions.
