The Opposition parties in West Bengal on Monday launched a fresh attack on the TMC government after the Supreme Court turned down the state’s government plea.

Challenging the Calcutta High Court’s order for a CBI probe into allegations of land grabbing and sexual assault in Sandeshkhali – in which suspended TMC leader Shahjahan Sheikh is a key accused.

Calling the Supreme Court’s order “a big win for the victims of Sandeshkhali”, the BJP said it was a defeat for Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.

“Another big win for the victims of Sandeshkhali and a blot on Mamata Banerjee as the chief minister of Bengal who has repeatedly denied gory accounts of rape and sexual assault unleashed by her henchman Sheikh Shahjahan. Women of Sandeshkhali defeated Mamata Banerjee in elections and now in the court too,” BJP IT cell chief Amit Malviya posted on X.

Pointing to the Supreme Court’s observation that the state administration “had not done anything for months” and failed to arrest the main accused, Congress spokesperson Soumya Aich Roy alleged that the TMC was scared of “big names” getting exposed and therefore was trying to stall the probe. “The masterminds sitting in Kalighat and Camac Street should be arrested.

Festive offer

Why did they (TMC government) go to court (against the CBO probe)? It was just an attempt to save people like Sheikh Shahjahan. If CBI investigates in the right direction, real people will be exposed, which is why TMC is trying its best to stop the probe,” the Congress leader said.

The CPI(M) said the court’s order has vindicated the party’s stand. “The thing we were saying and pointing out the involvement of big leaders is what the Supreme Court has said today. A central agency team going for a probe and being attacked by a mob. Can this happen without the help of state administration? Why did the TMC government challenge the CBI probe in the SC by spending common people’s money,” asked CPI(M) leader Bikash Ranjan Bhattacharya.
