Four men were shot dead as two groups of villagers in Punjab’s Gurdaspur district opened fire at each other on Sunday evening seemingly over an old rivalry over the distribution of irrigation water, the police said.
Sarpanch Angrej Singh, a resident of Vithwan village, had been involved in a dispute over canal irrigation water with a local individual for some time. He came to Sri Hargobindpur Sahib with his brother Baljit Singh and nephew Shamsher Singh. They encountered a rival group of Nirmal Singh from Moor village and Ravel Singh from Golapur village, and Balraj Singh, near the traffic lights at Sri Hargobindpur on late Sunday evening, said the police.
Both groups carried fire arms and fired 40 to 50 bullets at each other, the police added.
Several people were injured from both sides and admitted to hospitals in Batala and Amritsar hospitals.
At Batala Civil Hospital, doctors pronounced two of the injured, Shamsher Singh and Baljeet Singh, dead. Two others, Balraj Singh and Nirmal Singh, passed away at an Amritsar hospital.
Sarpanch Angrej Singh, Surinder Singh and others are receiving treatment in different hospitals. DSP Rajesh Kakkar said an investigation is in progress and appropriate legal action will be taken.
