Days after Tamil Nadu announced a plan for a new airport at Hosur near Bengaluru, the Karnataka Government has said it will soon decide the location for a second airport for the state capital.

Industries Minister M B Patil said on Sunday that the Government had already picked four or five “tentative locations” near Bengaluru for the airport. The exclusivity clause of Bengaluru International Airport Ltd (BIAL), due to which airports cannot come up in its 130-km radius, will end in 2032.

“We don’t have to wait till 2033 for the second airport work to start,” he said.

The minister claimed that the Tamil Nadu government’s announcement came days after Karnataka started consultations for the second airport for Bengaluru.

Hosur is located at a distance of 76 km from BIAL at Devanahalli. “We have to see whether the exclusivity clause will apply to them (Tamil Nadu),” Patil told a news conference.

Festive offer

The five tentative locations were identified on the basis of the ease of connectivity and passenger load. “For connectivity, places like Doddaballapur, Dobbaspet and Tumakuru (are ideal). If we consider passenger load, a location near Whitefield, south Bengaluru or Kanakapura Road (could be identified),” he said.

The location for the second airport is dependent on the passenger load and whether it requires to be linked to BIAL. “The infrastructure department has held a meeting and discussed several issues. Another meeting is scheduled with Chief Minister Siddaramaiah,” Patil said, adding that the government would take a call on it soon.

“We will shortly announce the location of the second airport,” the minister added.

On June 27, Tamil Nadu CM M K Stalin announced the plan to construct an airport at Hosur, 40 km south of Bengaluru. Hosur’s proximity to the Karnataka capital has helped it benefit from the tech boom, with the city in the neighbouring state witnessing a surge in investment in recent years.
