The Gujarat Police has registered an FIR against a man for sharing a deepfake video of Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Goods and Services Tax (GST), Minister of State (Home) Harsh Sanghavi posted on his official X handle.
In the video, posted by one Chirag Patel on his X, Sitharaman could be seen giving a byte to the media while terming GST as the ‘Gopaniya Suchna Tax’. As per his X account, Patel is based in the US.
Attaching a snap of the tweet, Sanghavi wrote on Tuesday: “This deceptive act of spreading deepfake videos to mislead citizens is abhorrent. Gujarat police registered an FIR against this person for spreading this deepfake video… Let’s not fall prey to such manipulative tactics and prioritise truth and accountability in our digital spaces. Together, we can combat misinformation and safeguard the trust of the public.”
Later, the Ahmedabad City Police wrote on X that an “FIR has been registered” against the man under various provisions of Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Information Technology Act at the city’s Crime Branch. ens
