overview

Mumbai Indians had a rocky run in the IPL 2023 season, saved partially by a late flourish to waltz into the Playoffs after a two-year drought.

MI only won three of their first seven games but still made it to the final four after lifting themselves in the second-half of the tournament. The magic run, however, could not take them to another final.

After drowning Lucknow Super Giants in the Eliminator, MI received a 62-run thrashing by Gujarat Titans in the second Qualifier. That would also mark an end for Rohit Sharma's captaincy stint with Mumbai for now as the franchise traded in Hardik Pandya from Titans in a stunning homecoming. Honed by the franchise in his early days, Pandya was named captain, replacing Rohit, ahead of the IPL 2024 auction.

Mumbai remain the joint-most successful side in IPL history with five titles alongside Chennai Super Kings. Under the leadership of a young captain in Rohit, MI won their first title in 2013 and backed it up with triumphs in 2015, 2017, 2019, and 2019. Rohit is also the leading run-scorer for Mumbai in the IPL, with 4441 runs from 182 appearances.

Having struggled with inexperience in their bowling since the last two seasons, Mumbai went up for three overseas pace recruits in Gerald Coetzee (Rs. 5 crore), Dilshan Madushanka (Rs. 4.60 crore), and Nuwan Thushara (Rs. 4.80 crore) in the latest auction.

MI squad for IPL 2024: Rohit Sharma, Dewald Brevis, Suryakumar Yadav, Ishan Kishan, N. Tilak Varma, Tim David, Vishnu Vinod, Arjun Tendulkar, Shams Mulani, Nehal Wadhera, Jasprit Bumrah, Kumar Kartikeya, Piyush Chawla, Akash Madhwal, Jason Behrendorff, Romario Shepherd, Hardik Pandya (c), Gerald Coetzee, Dilshan Madushanka, Shreyas Gopal, Nuwan Thushara, Naman Dhir, Anshul Kamboj, Mohammad Nabi, and Shivalik Sharma.
