overview

"The England cricket team has been one of the most successful teams in Cricket World Cup history, having appeared in every edition of the tournament to date and reaching the final on four occasions. However, they could never win the elusive title until 2019 when they were crowned champions for the first time after a thrilling victory over New Zealand in the final.

England were the inaugural hosts of the Cricket World Cup in 1975 and reached the tournament's semi-finals, where Australia defeated them. Four years later, England were the hosts once again and reached the final of the 1979 Cricket World Cup, but the West Indies defeated them by 92 runs. In 1983, where India won the title, England again reached the World Cup semi-final but was beaten by India in the semi-final at Old Trafford, Manchester, England.

England was again runners-up in the 1987 Cricket World Cup, this time losing to Australia by seven runs. In 1992, England reached the final, but Pakistan defeated them by 22 runs. In 1996, England were beaten by Sri Lanka in the 1st quarter-final in Faisalabad. Sri Lanka won by five wickets with 56 balls remaining. England hosted the 1999 Cricket World Cup but could not progress to the tournament's knockout stage for the first time in the tournament's history.

In the turn of the next century, England could not qualify for the knockouts again when South Africa hosted the tournament in 2003, after forfeiting their first match against Zimbabwe and winning three out of the other five games. In 2007, England managed to progress to the Super 8 stage of the tournament by winning both their matches against Associate Nations. They were eliminated in the Super 8 stage, beating Ireland, Bangladesh and West Indies but losing to four other Test-playing nations.

In 2011, England started their campaign poorly with shock defeats against Ireland and Bangladesh but bowed out in the quarter-final after losing to Sri Lanka. In 2015, the Three Lions had a forgettable campaign when they were out in the pool stage itself. They could win just two games and suffered four losses. This was the third time they had not progressed from the group stage.

In 2019, England's wait for a Cricket World Cup title finally ended when they hosted the tournament for the fourth time."
