"With five stars around their crest, Australia are the most successful team in the history of the ODI Cricket World Cup. Having won their first title in 1987 and their last one as recently as in 2015, the team in yellow went on to win three successive World Cups from 1999 to 2007 under Steve Waugh and Ricky Ponting's captaincy. Coming into the 2023 edition, the Pat Cummins-led side have a 2-1 ODI series win against India in India to their name from March 2023. Their first outing at the world tournament saw the Ian Chappell-led side reach the final only to be bested by Clive Lloyd’s West Indies.
It was under Allan Border that Australia won their first World Cup back in 1987 when the competition was hosted in India and Pakistan. Their third appearance in the summit clash was in 1996 against Sri Lanka. It didn’t result in a second title as Arjuna Ranatunga’s men prevailed in Lahore.
Their next campaign in the tournament kickstarted a 34-game unbeaten streak that would extend until the 2011 World Cup league stage fixture against Pakistan. Ricky Ponting and Co would eventually be knocked out in the quarter finals by India.
Winning the title in 2015, Australia became only the second team to win a World Cup at home after India did so in 2011. This time under the captainship of Michael Clarke. Coincidentally, they beat co-hosts New Zealand, just like India overcame Sri Lanka - who also hosted the 2011 tournament.
Australia are one of the seven teams to have played in all editions of the tournament, alongside India, Sri Lanka, Pakistan, West Indies, England and New Zealand. With 94 appearances — more than any other team in the competition — they also have the best win percentage (74.73) with only 23 losses in the tournament."
