Fort Chambly at the foot of the Chambly rapids on the Richelieu River in Quebec, Canada, was built by the French in 1711. It was the last of three forts to be built on the same site. The first - then called Fort Saint Louis - was constructed in 1665 by captain Jacques de Chambly, to protect New France from Iroquois attacks. After minor repairs, the fort was burned by the Indians in 1702, but was reconstructed in 1702. By then it was already known as Fort Chambly. If you are in the same boat as I was , you would ask what is Fort Chambly? Why didn't I ever learn something about Fort Chambly when I was a school kid? Why didn't I hear something about Fort Chambly when I learned about Fort Carillon (Ticonderoga) and Fort Frederic (Crown Point)? I don't know the answers to these questions but I can now say that the Mylott-Glode-Poissant-Bissonnette-Beauvais families would never have existed in Québec and live in the Richelieu region if it was not for Fort…

Sitting in the desert with its towering golden-hued walls and imposing bastions, the 12th century Jaisalmer Fort certainly makes an impact. This fort has two important titles - the oldest desert fort in the world and the second oldest of all of Rajasthan’s forts. Its historical value is also recognized, with one particularly chilling custom having taken place within its walls at least three times.
