Performance of Asian Microfinance Institutions (MFIs): The Role of Capital Structure and Macro-Institutional Quality Capital structure does not affect social performance of Microfinance Institutions (MFIs), i.e., breadth of outreach or depth of outreach, but rather significantly affects financial performance. In particular, equity is preferred over debt for socially motivated firms like MFIs. Do safety measures actually reduce risk? The Peltzman Effect suggests that people engage in riskier behaviour when safety measures are mandated. SEBI's recent proposal to increase the lot size of options contracts aims to reduce losses among small retail investors, with a SEBI study revealing that 90% of individual traders in the equity Futures and Options (F&O) segment experience losses. NSE data shows that 80% of traders have a turnover of less than Rs 10 lakh. By raising the minimum derivative contract value to Rs 30 lakh, SEBI intends to curb the participation of these retail traders, as 9 out of 10 traders who lose money in F&O belong to this category. If we consider the Peltzman Effect, small traders (80%) might leverage more to meet the Rs 30 lakh contract value, potentially exposing them to greater losses. While I am not predicting this outcome, history often repeats itself for those who ignore it. It is important that decision-makers look beyond immediate consequences. Action without intent is insufficient and can damage the very objective it intends to achieve.
